Warriors ground Eagles with stifling second half

MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College overcame a slim two-point halftime deficit by shooting 51 percent and limiting Benedictine University to just five made field goals in the second half on its way to defeating the Eagles 78-51 on Saturday afternoon at the Recreation Complex.

After trailing by two points, 34-32, at halftime, the Warriors began the second half with an 18-2 run to take a commanding 16-point lead with 10:53 remaining in the game. WLC held Benedictine to just four points through the first 9:33 of the half. Wisconsin Lutheran later extended its lead to a game-high 29 points, 78-49, after a pair of free throws from freshman Rachel Hoft (Germantown, Wis./Germantown), who finished with eight points off the bench.

The Warriors shot 51.6 percent (16-for-31) in the second half, while limiting the Eagles to only 18.5 percent (5-for-27). WLC out-scored BU 46-17 in the final period. Senior Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) scored 12 of her game-high 18 points in the half for the Warriors. Only four players reached the scoring column in the half for the Eagles, while WLC received contributions from nine different players.

The two teams exchanged leads five times throughout the closely-contested first half, which also featured six ties. Each team also held six-point leads in the half. Karyn Conerty scored all 10 of her points in the opening half for BU, which held a 17-9 advantage in points off turnovers in the half.

Junior Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) totaled 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Laete added 11 boards to pace the Warriors with a pair of double-doubles. Sophomore Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) was the third player to reach double figures with 12 points. WLC shot 48.3 percent (28-for-58) for the game and out-rebounded the Eagles, 46-29. The Warriors were an efficient 9-for-20 from beyond the arc and 13-for-15 from the charity stripe.

Tracey Walsh poured in a team-high 17 points to pace Benedictine (7-4, 3-2 NAC), which shot 29.6 percent (16-for-54) from the floor.

Wisconsin Lutheran (10-1, 5-0 NAC) opens its three-game week on Tuesday, January 11 when it travels to Concordia University Wisconsin (8-5, 7-2 NAC) in Mequon, Wis. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. at the R. John Buuck Field House. The Falcons were picked ahead of the Warriors to win the North Division crown.
