NEW BERLIN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College women's tennis team claimed a share of the 2011 Northern
Athletics Conference championship with a 9-0 sweep over Alverno
College at the Princeton Club on Saturday. With the win, the
Warriors have earned the top seed in the six-team conference
tournament in the spring.
Junior Kaitlyn Strehlow (Hales Corners, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
finished a perfect NAC regular season at #1 singles after she
defeated Tricia Goska 6-0, 6-0.
The remainder of the Warriors singles players all won in
straight sets over the Inferno (4-9, 4-6 NAC) starting with junior
Kathryn Hendee (Rockton, Ill./Rockton) at #2, 6-1, 7-5. Sophomore
Emily Pearson (Prairie du Sac, Wis./Luther Preparatory) was
victorious at #3, 6-4, 6-0, while freshman Alyssa Strangstalien
(Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) took her #4 singles match, 6-2,
6-1. Freshman Petra Krause (Oshkosh, Wis./West) won at #5, 6-2, 6-1
and senior Erin Mathiak (Slinger, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran)
rounded out the singles sweep with 6-0, 6-1 win.
All three doubles teams used identical 8-1 scores to gain three
more victories for the forest green and white and help push the
Warriors to the 9-0 victory.
The doubles teams that were victorious for WLC were Strehlow and
freshman Stephanie Gengler (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) at #1, Hendee
and Lindsay Gauger (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) at #2, and Pearson
and Strangstalien at #3.
The Warriors (11-4, 10-1 NAC) finished their regular season tied
with Edgewood and Concordia Wisconsin for the regular season
championship. The team tournament, featuring the top six teams in
the NAC standings, will be held in the spring.
Wisconsin Lutheran returns to action next weekend when it
concludes the fall portion of its schedule at the NAC Individual
Tournament in Madison, Wis. The tournament will take place next
Saturday and Sunday, October 8-9, at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
