SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College football team fell to Lakeland College Saturday afternoon
at Taylor Field by a final score of 20-7 in their first Northern
Athletics Conference road game of the season.
The Muskies (3-3, 3-0 NAC) out-scored the Warriors 14-0 in the
second quarter to remain unbeaten in conference play, starting with
a one-yard TD run by Adam Miller just seven seconds into the second
quarter to give Lakeland a 7-0 lead.
Muskies quarterback Dylan Van Straten then ran a touchdown in
from seven yards out with 4:10 to play in the half, putting
Wisconsin Lutheran in a 14-0 hole.
The Warriors came out strong in the second half as they held the
Muskies on their opening drive and then used a seven-play, 69-yard
drive to cut the deficit to seven points with 8:30 to play in the
third quarter.
Donavin Tucker (Brookfield, Wis./East) ran the ball four times
for 59 yards on the drive, including a 26-yard touchdown scamper to
make the score 14-7. Tucker finished with a game-high 103 yards on
16 attempts, good for 6.4 yards per carry.
Lakeland would answer, however, as Van Straten found Justin
Groeneveld for a 31-yard touchdown pass to put the Warriors down 13
points with 11:26 remaining in the fourth.
Wisconsin Lutheran would threaten, but could not punch the ball
into the end zone the rest of the way as the Muskies came away with
the 20-7 victory.
Josh Stodola (Denmark, Wis./Denmark) had four catches for 85
yards to lead the Warriors receivers as quarterback Zach Shaw
(Gurnee, Ill./Warren Township) completed 10-of-22 passes for 119
yards. Van Straten threw for 158 yards, while also rushing for 89
yards to lead the Muskies.
Wisconsin Lutheran, which made a pair of goal line stands in the
game, was led defensively by Tyler Schoen (Marion, Wis./Marion) and
Trey Cochran (Bay City, Mich./Central) as both players finished
with eight tackles. Tyler Oslund led the Muskies with seven
tackles, including one for a loss.
The turnover battle proved key as the Warriors turned the ball
over twice compared to the zero turnovers for the Muskies. Lakeland
out-gained Wisconsin Lutheran, 325-232.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-4, 1-2 NAC) will remain on the road next
week when it travels to Rockford, Ill., to face off against the
Rockford College Regents (0-6, 0-3 NAC). Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
at Sam Greeley Field.
