SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College men's soccer team was defeated by the Lakeland College
Muskies 6-2 Saturday in a Northern Athletics Conference matchup at
Muskie Field in Sheboygan, Wis.
The Warriors struck first with just 5:08 off the first-half
clock when Nate Waggoner (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran) found the
back of the net off an assist from Jake Semmann (Grafton,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran).
Lakeland tied the score at 1-1 at the 14:56 mark on a goal by
Ben Koepsell, the first of three for him on the day. The Muskies
added two more tallies before the end of the first half and went
into halftime leading 3-1 over WLC.
The Warriors were out-shot 13-5 in the first half. Starting
goalkeeper Tony Bink (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) made
four saves in the opening frame.
The second-half score stayed 3-1 until 61:34 when Koepsell added
his second netter of the game. The Muskies scored two more times
within five minutes on goals from Koepsell and Jeremy Hardy for the
6-1 lead. WLC recorded its final tally of the contest at 75:25 on
another Waggoner goal off an assist from Brett Maxwell (Hobart,
Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran).
The Warriors were edged in shots in the second half, 7-6, and
were out-shot 20-11 for the game by Lakeland.
Waggoner paced the Warriors offensive attack with four shots.
Bink, Jon Stewart (Waukesha, Wis./South) and Kevin Ulwelling
(Libertyville, Ill./Shoreland Lutheran) combined for seven saves in
the game.
Hardy and Koepsell recorded six and five shots, respectively, to
lead the Muskies (6-7-3, 4-4-2 NAC). Alex Piekarski made five saves
in the net for the hosts.
Wisconsin Lutheran (5-10-1, 2-7-1 NAC) concludes its 2011 season
Wednesday when it hosts Aurora University (8-8-1, 7-3 NAC) at 7
p.m. at Warrior Field. The contest also marks Senior Night for the
Warriors.
