MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's soccer team concluded its 2011 season with a 3-0 loss to the
Aurora University Spartans Tuesday on Senior Night at Warrior
Field.
The Spartans (9-8-1, 8-3 NAC) struck quickly by scoring just 20
seconds after the opening whistle on a goal from Jim Kelly.
Emmanuel Denton assisted the play that gave AU an early 1-0
advantage.
AU's Colby Newquist scored at the 37:20 mark off a pass from
Victor Ramirez to give the Spartans a 2-0 edge going into
halftime.
The Warriors were barely out-shot in the opening half, 7-6 as
starting sophomore goalkeeper Kevin Ulwelling (Libertyville,
Ill./Shoreland Lutheran) made two saves in the first 45 minutes of
action.
The score remained 2-0 until the Spartans Xavier Carillo scored
the game's final goal at 73:50 in the second half, putting WLC in a
3-0 deficit.
Aurora narrowly out-shot the Warriors 15-9 for the contest.
Freshman Jake Semmann (Grafton, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) led
the forest green and white with three shots while senior James
Sather (Milwaukee, Wis./Nathan Hale) tallied two shots. Newquist
led Aurora with four shots.
Sophomore Jon Stewart (Waukesha, Wis./South) played the second
half in the net for the Warriors and stopped three shots. Nick
Sloan and Ethan Cashen combined to make three saves for Aurora.
The Warriors four-year seniors were honored at halftime of the
match. The six four-year seniors playing in their final game were
Sather, Derrick Bordeleau (Hobart, Wis./N.E.W. Lutheran), Brett
Maxwell (Hobart, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran), Trevor Schwartz (Lake
Geneva, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran), Jeremy Smith (Waukesha, Wis./New
Berlin West) and Nate Waggoner (Crete, Ill./Illinois Lutheran).
Wisconsin Lutheran concludes its 2011 season with a 5-11-1
overall record, including a 2-8-1 mark in the Northern Athletics
Conference.
