MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's soccer team defeated the Rockford College Regents in a 2-1
double overtime thriller on Wednesday night at Warrior Field. The
victory was the first in the NAC for the Warriors this season.
The Regents scored first at the 17 minute mark of the first half
as Tyler Burg assisted Sam Medina-Conchi. Despite both teams
getting off seven shots in the first period, the score stood 1-0 in
favor Rockford at half.
With 27:22 left in regulation, Florin Maduta (Waterford,
Wis./Waterford) scored the game-tying goal for the Warriors on an
assist from Josh Higginson (Lyons, Wis./Burlington). The Warriors
out-shot the Regents 14-1 in the second half, but were unable to
add more to their tally. The score remained tied at 1-1 at the end
of regulation.
The Warriors continued on the attack in the first overtime by
out-shooting their opponents 4-1, yet they still could not find the
back of the net. The score remained 1-1 at the end of the first
overtime.
In the second overtime, the Warriors proved too heavy on offense
for the Regents as the hosts recorded eight shots, while the
Regents were held without a shot attempt for the entire second
overtime. With 29 seconds left in the period, Maduta connected with
Trevor Schwartz (Lake Geneva, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) who netted
the game-winning score.
Senior James Sather (Milwaukee, Wis./Nathan Hale) attempted a
team-high nine of the Warriors' 33 shots in the contest. Schwartz
added six shots, while Maduta contributed with a goal and an
assist.
Kevin Ulwelling (Libertyville, Ill./Shoreland Lutheran) made
five saves and faced nine shots in the entire 109:31 in the net for
the Warriors.
For the Regents (3-8, 0-6 NAC), Sam Medina-Conchi led the way
with nine shot attempts. He also posted the Regents' only goal of
the game.
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-6, 1-4 NAC) remains home to face Maranatha
Baptist Bible College (4-6, 1-3 NAC) on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at
Warrior Field.
