APPLETON, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's basketball team fell behind early and trailed for the entire
game en route to suffering its first loss of the 2011-2012 season
Friday night, 72-64, to Lawrence at the Alexander Gymnasium.
Wisconsin Lutheran fell behind 9-0 early and trailed by as many
as 13 points (29-16) in the first half. However, the Warriors used
a 13-0 run to tie the score at 29-29 with 2:42 left before halftime
but were never able to gain the lead. The host Vikings (1-1) scored
the final nine points of the first half and went into the locker
room with a 38-29 lead.
WLC shot 32.4 percent from the floor in the first half and was
paced by junior Nate Bauer's (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran)
nine points. LU, which shot an impressive 51.9 percent, received 21
points from Chris Siebert in the half.
Lawrence led for the entire second period as the Warriors got a
close as six points on two different occasions late in the game.
WLC trailed by a game-high 13 points with 11:01 left in the
half.
The Warriors out-scored the Vikings by one point in the second
half, but shot 35.3 percent compared to Lawrence's 45.8
percent.
Senior Alex Merbach (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) led all
scorers with 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Bauer and junior
Tim Demuch (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran) chipped in with 14
and 13 points, respectively. The Warriors finished with a 33.8
shooting percentage for the game and were just 5-for-26 from beyond
the arc.
For Lawrence, Siebert paced four players in double figures with
26 points. Conor Klusendorf added nine rebounds. The Vikings
concluded the contest shooting 49 percent (25-for-51) from the
floor.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-1) returns to action Tuesday when it hosts
Wis.-Whitewater (1-0) in a 7 p.m. non-conference clash at the
Recreation Complex.
