MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's basketball team was defeated by the Carthage College Lady
Reds 63-57 Saturday afternoon in the championship game of the
Dunn's Sporting Goods Tip-Off Tournament at the Recreation Complex.
The loss put an end to the Warriors' 16-game home winning
streak.
Following a three-pointer from freshman Katelyn Kuehl (Fond du
Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) on WLC's opening possession of the
game, Carthage scored nine straight points and led by as many as 11
points (20-9) in the first half. The Warriors, who trailed for the
entire first half, found themselves down by just five points,
25-20, at halftime to the preseason favorites of College Conference
of Illinois and Wisconsin.
The Lady Reds shot 47.8 percent (10-for-21) from the field in
the opening 20 minutes, while WLC was held to just 30.8 percent
(8-for-26) shooting.
Wisconsin Lutheran tied the score at 31-31 at the 16:51 mark of
the second half on another three-pointer from Kuehl. Carthage
answered with a three of its own the following possession and would
never let its lead slip away. The visitors led by 11 points (52-41)
with 7:55 remaining, before WLC trimmed its deficit down to just
four points with 1:09 on the clock, but could get no closer.
Kuehl netted a game-high 19 points on 5-for-8 shooting from the
floor. She was the only Warrior to reach double figures in the
contest. Freshman Kristen Schulz (Safford, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran)
corralled a game-best 10 rebounds to lead the Warriors to a 33-27
advantage on the glass.
For the game, the Warriors shot 37 percent (20-for-54) from the
floor and were just 4-for-21 (19 percent) from three-point range.
WLC was very efficient from the free-throw line, making 13 of its
15 attempts for 86.7 percent.
Diana Jacklin led three players from Carthage (3-0) in double
figures with 13 points and seven rebounds. The Lady Reds shot
20-for-45 (44.4 percent) from the floor in the game and were a
stellar 18-for-22 from the charity stripe.
In the consolation matchup, Bethel (Minn.) (1-1) defeated
Nebraska Wesleyan (1-2), 72-46.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-1) will have a week to prepare for its
Northern Athletics Conference opener before traveling to Marian
University in Fond du Lac, Wis. next Saturday, November 26. Tip-off
between the Warriors and Sabres is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the
Sadoff Gymnasium.
