FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Senior forward Rachel
Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) scored 26 points and
pulled down 12 rebounds, both game highs, as the Wisconsin Lutheran
College women's basketball team defeated Marian 78-72 Saturday in
its Northern Athletics Conference opener at the Sadoff
Gymnasium.
The Warriors and Sabres (3-1, 0-1 NAC) went back-and-forth early
until Wisconsin Lutheran built a first-half high seven-point lead
with 8:36 to play in the opening half after a pair of Katelyn Kuehl
(Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) free throws. Marian
responded, however, on a 19-5 run to give the hosts a 39-34 lead
with 1:30 to play in the half. The Warriors did cut their deficit
to just one point before the break as they trailed 41-40.
The second half was again a back-and-forth affair as the game
was tied at 57-57 with 13:16 to play. Wisconsin Lutheran then went
on a 7-0 run to take a 64-57 lead, highlighted by a three-point
shot from Rachel Hoft (Germantown, Wis./Germantown).
Marian again had an answer, however, as it went on another run
and took a 70-68 lead with 4:57 on the clock. Wisconsin Lutheran
went up 71-70, but Marian responded on the next possession taking a
72-71 lead with 2:19 left in the game.
That would be all the scoring for the Sabres the rest of the way
as Johnson scored six of the Warriors' final seven points to give
the forest green and white the six-point victory.
Kuehl and Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) also
finished in double figures with 11 points each. Kristen Schulz
(Safford, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) pulled down nine rebounds and
Alyssa Allister (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) led the team
with five assists.
Marian had three players finish in double digits led by
Elizabeth Zutz's 19 points. Alexis Becker added 13 points and a
team-high nine rebounds, while Sarah Albert chipped in with 10
points.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-1, 1-0 NAC) returns to the court Wednesday
night when it hosts Alverno (2-3, 0-1 NAC) in a NAC matchup.
