MILWAUKEE - The Rockford Regents used a 15-2
run to open the second half and break open a 41-41 halftime tie en
route to defeating Wisconsin Lutheran College 88-80 in a Northern
Athletics Conference game Saturday evening at the Recreation
Complex.
The Regents opened the game by scoring the first six points and
led by as many as nine points, 14-5, at the 14:50 mark. The
Warriors came back to take their only lead of the half at 19-18
with 10:43 to play in the period. Rockford regained the lead and
extended it to eight points at 7:23 before WLC came back again to
tie the contest at 41-41 at the break.
Wisconsin Lutheran shot 53.1 percent (17-for-32) from the floor
in the half, compared to the Regents' stellar 64.3 percent
(18-for-28) performance from the field. Junior Nate Bauer (Lake
Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) led all scorers in the first half
with 14 points. Tory Minnifield and Danny Fair tallied 13 points
each.
Rockford began the second half on a 15-2 run to lead 56-43 at
the 15:58 mark. The Warriors trailed by at least 10 points for the
majority of the half, including a game-high 18-point deficit twice.
WLC was able to trim its deficit down to eight points twice in the
final 1:28 of the game, but unfortunately time was not on its
side.
The Regents carried over their impressive shooting performance
from the first half as they shot 63.6 percent (14-for-22) in the
second half and 64 percent (32-for-50) for the game. Conversely,
the Warriors shot 38.2 percent (13-for-34) in the half and finished
the game shooting 45.5 percent (30-for-66).
Bauer and Alex Merbach (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) each
scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures. Taylor
Chladek (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) scored 14 points off the
bench and Russell Strutz (Sturtevant, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran)
added 10.
For the Regents (5-3, 3-1 NAC), Minnifield and Fair scored 24
and 23 points, respectively, on a combined 18-for-26 shooting.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-9, 0-2 NAC) will next be in action Friday,
December 16 when it travels to Watertown, Wis. to face Maranatha
(2-4, 0-3 NAC) in another NAC matchup. Tip-off between the Warriors
and Crusaders is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Maranatha Gymnasium.
