SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College women's basketball team moved to 3-0 in the Northern
Athletics Conference with a 73-62 road win over Lakeland Tuesday
night at the Moose and Dona Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Warriors and Muskies (2-3, 1-2 NAC) played a fairly even
opening seven-plus minutes as WLC led 16-14 with 12:45 to play in
the first half. Wisconsin Lutheran then went on a 14-6 run to take
a first-half best 10-point lead with 5:41 left before halftime.
After that 10 point advantage, the two teams again went
back-and-forth as the Warriors took a 35-27 advantage into the
locker room.
Alyssa Allister (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) continued
her impressive shooting from behind the arc as she made three shots
from deep in the opening half to pace the Warriors attack.
Wisconsin Lutheran also used offensive rebounding to its advantage
in the first half, out-scoring the Muskies 12-4 in second-chance
points.
There was no more back-and-forth action to begin the second half
as WLC came out of the break on a 12-2 run to take a game-high
18-point lead with 16 minutes left in the contest. Allister started
the run with another three-point shot, while Rachel Johnson
(Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) tallied four points and Krissy
Day (West Allis, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) recorded an and-one
three-point play to aid the run.
Lakeland cut its deficit down to seven points with under a
minute left, but after the 12-2 run could not muster much of a
threat as the Warriors coasted to the 11-point victory.
Johnson finished with a game-high 25 points to lead the WLC
charge, while Allister finished with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting
from three point range. Katelyn Kuehl (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago
Lutheran) added 11 points, 10 rebounds and a team-high five
assists. Kristen Schulz (Safford, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) pulled
down a game-high 11 rebounds, while Johnson added nine boards as
WLC out-rebounded Lakeland, 44-29.
Becky Mayo was one of three players to finish with double-digit
points for the Muskies with a team-high 15. Taylor Jandrin added 13
points and Dana Henrich chipped in with 12 for the hosts.
Wisconsin Lutheran (5-2, 3-0 NAC) returns to action Saturday
when it hosts Rockford (3-4, 2-2 NAC) in a NAC matchup. Tip-off
between the Warriors and Regents is set for 2 p.m. at the
Recreation Complex.
