MILWAUKEE - Senior Erika Laete's rebound put
back with .4 seconds left in the game lifted the Wisconsin Lutheran
College women's basketball team to a 70-69 win over Concordia
University Wisconsin in a battle for first place in the NAC North
on Thursday night at the Recreation Complex.
The dramatic victory came after the Falcons missed the front end
of a bonus situation and Laete corralled the rebound with eight
seconds remaining. After Shavon Dillon's (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope
School) pull-up jumper came up short, Laete grabbed the rebound and
her put back went through the net with less than a second left on
the clock for the last-second victory.
Both teams exchanged leads eight times throughout the second
half. The Warriors held a half-high lead of six points early on,
but it quickly diminished.
The Warriors struggled in the second half, shooting just 25.7
percent (9-for-35) from the field, but made 12 of 16 from the
charity stripe. The Falcons shot 44 percent (11-for-25) from the
field, including a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc.
The opening half saw non-stop back-and-forth action for the
first four minutes until Dillon sparked an 11-2 run for the
Warriors with a three-pointer. At the midway point of the first
half, WLC led the Falcons by a game-high eight points, 21-13. CUW
would battle back to tie the game 35-35 with :44 seconds left in
the opening period. A layup by Laete on the final possession of the
half for the Warriors gave WLC a 37-35 edge at the break.
Laete provided the bulk of the offense in the first half scoring
20 points, while grabbing five rebounds for the Warriors. WLC shot
46.9 percent (15-for-32) and corralled 20 rebounds, while CUW fired
on 51.7 percent (15-for-29) of its shots and finished with 11
boards. Katie Luethe led the Falcons with 10 points.
Laete recorded her seventh double-double of the season finishing
with 30 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran), who was the only other Warrior to reach
double figures on the night, added 12 points and seven rebounds.
WLC concluded the game shooting 24-for-67 (35.8 percent), however
it out-rebounded the Falcons, 47-29, resulting in a 16-4 advantage
in second-chance points.
Kendall Kerns joined Luethe in double figures with 18 points for
the Falcons (15-8, 14-3 NAC), who shot 48.1 percent (25-for-54) for
the game. Luethe finished with 14 points.
Wisconsin Lutheran (19-3, 14-2 NAC) will play its final regular
season home game on Saturday when it hosts Edgewood College (13-9,
11-5 NAC) on Senior Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the
Recreation Complex.
