WATERTOWN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College women's basketball team won its school-record 21st game and
extended its winning streak to a school-record 10 games on Friday
night by defeating Maranatha Baptist Bible College 65-54 in a game
that was postponed from Thursday.
The Warriors jumped out in front 14-5 at the 13:54 mark of the
opening half, but went scoreless for the next four-plus minutes.
Fortunately for WLC, the host Crusaders were ice cold from the
floor. MBBC was held without a point over seven minutes as the
Warriors built their lead to a half-high 11 points, 18-7, with 8:40
remaining before halftime. WLC went into the locker room ahead by
nine points, 27-18.
WLC shot just 30.6 percent (11-for-36) in the first half.
However, Maranatha was held to an even lower 25.9 percent
(7-for-27).
Wisconsin Lutheran never saw its lead drop below 11 points in
the second half, as it extended its margin to as many as 25 points,
61-36, with 10:08 left. However, WLC was held without a field goal
for the rest of the game as it managed to make just four free
throws during that span. The Crusaders closed to within 11 points
again as the final horn sounded.
Despite its scoring drought, the Warriors vastly improved on
their shooting percentage from the first half by going 12-for-27
(44.4 percent) from the field. MBBC shot just 9-for-23 (39.1
percent) in the period.
Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) led three
players in double figures with 11 points. Erika Laete (Spokane,
Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) and Krissy Day (West Allis,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) each scored 10. Jenna Neuberger (Muskego,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) grabbed seven rebounds.
Kristin Morrison, who was the only Crusader to reach double
figures, poured in a game-best 19 points for Maranatha (6-18, 1-17
NAC). She also added seven rebounds.
Wisconsin Lutheran (21-3, 16-2 NAC) remains on the road Saturday
when it travels to Dominican University (19-5, 14-3 NAC) in River
Forest, Ill., to battle the Stars in a NAC Challenge Game. Tip-time
is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Igini Sports Forum. The Warriors
have already secured the top seed in next week's NAC Tournament and
will have homecourt throughout.
