MILWAUKEE - The top-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran
College women's basketball team defeated the eighth-seeded
Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders 76-55 on Tuesday night to
advance to the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament Semifinals.
The 23rd victory of the season for WLC also tied a conference
record for most wins in a season by a NAC team
The first half began with the Warriors and Raiders exchanging
baskets until the score was knotted a six apiece. Soon after,
forced MSOE turnovers, finished layups and a three-point basket
from Rachel Hoft (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) off the bench helped
the Warriors break away from the pack. With shots dropping and a
6-for-7 first-half performance from the free-throw line, the
Warriors widened their margin to as many as 15 points at the 5:46
mark. MSOE responded, but WLC kept the margin in double digits and
entered halftime leading 33-22.
Wisconsin Lutheran never saw its lead drop below 11 points in
the second half, as it extended its margin to as many as 23 points
with just eight seconds remaining in the game. Shavon Dillon
(Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) helped provide a spark in the second
half, scoring 14 of her 18 total points in the period. She also
tallied a team-high six assists in the contest.
Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) tallied a
game-high 31 points, 18 in the second half alone, to lead the
Warriors in the victory. In addition to Dillon's 18, Rachel Johnson
(Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) also added 10. Two Warriors
earned a double-double as the forest green and white out-rebounded
the Raiders, 48-32, with Johnson and Laete leading the way grabbing
12 and 11 boards, respectively.
Wisconsin Lutheran concluded the contest shooting 46.2 percent
(30-for-65) from the field and 73.7 percent (14-for-19) from the
charity stripe.
Three players for MSOE (8-18, 5-12 NAC) reached double figures
in scoring. Shannon Larson and Heather Miller scored 16 and 15,
respectively. Carol Cayo also added 10 points and a team-high 13
rebounds.
Wisconsin Lutheran (22-3, 16-2 NAC) remains home on Thursday
when it faces fourth-seeded Benedictine University (16-9, 11-6 NAC)
in a NAC Tournament Semifinal game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
at the Recreational Complex. BU defeated fifth-seeded Edgewood
College 62-58 to advance to Thursday's semifinal.
