SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - Senior Erika Laete's
(Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) jumper with 17 seconds left
lifted Wisconsin Lutheran College to a 60-58 victory over the
Lakeland College Muskies on Thursday at the Woltzen Gymnasium.
The Warriors claimed the lead early but Lakeland never gave up.
Although the first half saw six lead changes, Wisconsin Lutheran
headed into the locker room with a 29-27 halftime edge. Sophomore
Brittanny Bahr (Caledonia, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) led the way for
the Warriors in the first half, scoring seven points in eight
minutes played. In the first half, the Warriors shot a solid 66.7
percent (4-for-6) from the three-point line, while the Muskies
managed only 20 percent (2-for-10) from behind the arc.
Wisconsin Lutheran extended its lead to as many as nine points,
43-34, in the second half, but could not keep Lakeland away. The
Muskies came surging back and trailed by only two points, 56-54,
with 2:19 remaining. Two free throws by Bahr put the Warriors up by
four points but another bucket by Lakeland closed the gap to two
again. A jumper by Laete on the Warriors' final possession with 17
seconds left proved to be the deciding factor as WLC escaped with a
two-point win.
Laete paced the Warriors with a game-high 16 points and
sophomore Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) added 12.
Junior Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
corralled six rebounds and both Laete and Dillon each pulled down
five boards. Wisconsin Lutheran's bench outscored Lakeland's 16-13,
which helped fuel the victory. WLC shot 45.1 percent (23-for-51)
from the floor in the game.
Allison Davis led the Muskies with a team-high 14 points and
four rebounds. Mary Dennewitz was the only other player for
Lakeland to finish in double digits with 12 points. Lakeland
finished the game shooting 36.2 percent (21-for-58) from the floor.
The Muskies owned a 27-12 advantage in points off turnovers over
the Warriors.
