MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's basketball team capped Winterfest weekend at WLC with a
77-51 win over cross-town rival Milwaukee School of Engineering on
Saturday afternoon to improve to 10-0 at the Recreation Complex
this season.
The Warriors jumped out to an early lead, going on a 14-2 run in
the first four minutes of the game. Throughout the remainder of the
half, WLC kept the lead in double digits, ending the first period
in front by 28 points, 46-18. Wisconsin Lutheran was led in the
first half by senior forward Erika Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen
Lutheran) who scored 10 points while grabbing five rebounds. WLC
shot a blistering 68 percent (17-for-25) from the field including
6-for-10 from beyond the three-point line. Meanwhile, MSOE was held
to just 19.2 percent (5-for-26) including 0-for-7 from beyond the
arc.
WLC continued to build upon its lead after halftime. Wisconsin
Lutheran pushed its margin up to as many as 32 points, 55-23, six
minutes into the second half. The Warriors held a lead of at least
14 points the rest of the way. WLC shot 36 percent (9-for-25) in
the second half and 52 percent (25-for-50) for the game.
Laete scored a game-high 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds for
the Warriors. Junior Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) scored 15 points while pulling down eight rebounds.
Sophomore Alyssa Allister (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran)
added 12 points, eight assists and four rebounds for WLC, which
out-rebounded MSOE, 44-34.
Shannon Larson led the Raiders with 18 points and six rebounds,
with 14 coming in the second half. Carol Cayo added 13 points and
eight rebounds. MSOE shot 37.8 percent (14-for-37) in the second
half and 30.2 percent (19-for-63) for the game.
Wisconsin Lutheran (18-3, 13-2 NAC) remains home at the
Recreation Complex to take on Concordia University Wisconsin (14-7,
13-2 NAC) in a first-place battle on Thursday at 7 p.m. The
Warriors narrowly fell to the Falcons 66-60 in their first meeting
of the season on January 11 in Mequon, Wis.
