Despite fast start, Warriors fall at home to Raiders

MILWAUKEE - MSOE overcame a 13-point first half deficit to spoil Winterfest and defeat Wisconsin Lutheran College 86-72 on Saturday afternoon at the Recreation Complex. Sophomore Tim Demuth (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran) scored a team-high 18 points for the Warriors.

The Warriors came out shooting hot, starting 8-for-9 from the field. WLC made their first seven shots, including three from beyond the arc to take an early 20-7 lead with 13:21 remaining in the first half. The Raiders, however, would make a run of their own tying the game at 22-22 with 8:33 remaining in the opening half. MSOE led by as many as seven with 2:57 remaining, however, WLC tied the game once again at 37-37 with the first of two free throws from Andy Thusius (Kenosha, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) with a half a second remaining on the clock. A miss on the second attempt left the score knotted 37-37 at the half.

Wisconsin Lutheran shot 57.1 percent (16-for-28) in the first half. After making their first 4-of-6 three pointers, the Warriors missed their next five. WLC won the battle on the glass, out-rebounding the Raiders 18-9 in the opening half. MSOE shot 52.2 percent (12-for-23) including 6-for-10 from beyond the arc. Sophomores DJ Cupertino (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) and Demuth each scored nine points for the Warriors in the half. Bennett Deacon led MSOE also with nine.

The Warriors came out strong and grabbed the lead in the second half, maintaining it until halfway through. MSOE took the lead, 54-52, on a three pointer by Deacon with 10:50 remaining in the game. A three-pointer by Demuth tied the game at 56-56. Another three-pointer by the Raiders' Derek Watton with 8:54 remaining gave the visitors the lead for good.

WLC cooled down in the second half, shooting 44.4 percent while going 4-for-13 from three-point range, finishing a season high 28-for-55 (50.9 percent) for the game. The Raiders (15-6, 9-4 NAC) shot 62.1 percent (18-for-29) in the second half and 30-for-52 (57.7 percent) for the game.

Behind Demuth, Cupertino finished with 15 points. Thusius finished with 12 points and five rebounds. Junior Alex Merbach (Kaukauna, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) added 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Raiders were led by Austin Meier with 19 points, eight steals and seven rebounds. Meier scored 14 of his 19 in the second half. Coming off the bench, Conor Cassidy and Watton each added 15 points, scoring 11 and 12 points respectively in the second half. The tandem accounted for 30 of the Raiders' 37 points off the bench. Deacon finished with 13 points, while John Cording added 11.

Wisconsin Lutheran (3-17, 2-10 NAC) remains home for two more games this week, beginning on Wednesday night when it hosts Marian University (3-17, 1-11 NAC) in a 7 p.m. tip off at the Recreation Complex. WLC won the first meeting at against Marian in Fond du Lac, Wis., 76-61 on January 18.
