NEW ULM, Minn. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's soccer team defeated Martin Luther College 4-3 on Sunday
afternoon in a non-conference clash at Knight Field. The Warriors
built a comfortable 4-0 lead, before the Knights netted three late
second half scores.
Wisconsin Lutheran and Martin Luther played evenly throughout
the first 35 minutes of the first period before a James Sather
(Milwaukee, Wis./Nathan Hale) header found the back of the net on
an assist from Jeremy Smith (Waukesha, Wis./New Berlin West) for a
1-0 advantage.
The Warriors wouldn't take long to add to their lead as Jake
Semmann (Grafton, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) scored unassisted
just a minute later. WLC would take its 2-0 lead into the half
after out-shooting the Knights, 14-11.
The Warriors kept up the pressure in the second half when Josh
Higginson (Lyons, Wis./Burlington) scored off an assist from Brad
Mallman (Plymouth, Wis./Plymouth) in the 54th minute.
Florin Maduta (Waterford, Wis./Waterford) took part in the
scoring parade in the 68 minute with an assist from Semmann.
The Knights reached the scoring column in the 74th minute on a
John Paustian score from David Roekle. MLC continued to pressure
the Warriors as Kaleb Buch netted goals in the 82nd and again in
the 83rd minute.
WLC goalkeeper Jon Stewart (Waukesha, Wis./South) made 11 saves
for the Warriors, who out-shot the Knights 26-23. Maduta led WLC
with five shots. Buch recorded a game-high nine shots for MLC
(0-4).
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-2) next hosts Midwest Conference opponent
Lawrence University (0-3) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Warrior
Field.
