MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's soccer team scored three first-half goals on its way to
defeating Lawrence University 4-1 on Wednesday night in a
non-conference game at Warrior Field.
Freshman Josh Higginson (Lyons, Wis./Burlington) scored two
goals and senior James Sather (Milwaukee, Wis./Nathan Hale) added a
goal and an assist to lead the Warriors attack.
It was the Vikings (0-5) who struck first when David Caprile
scored on a penalty kick 4:10 into the contest to give Lawrence an
early 1-0 advantage.
That lead wouldn't last long, however, as Higginson scored his
first goal 2:12 later off a pass from Sather to knot the score at
1-1.
Sather then found the back of the net on a header scored off a
corner kick from freshman Mavric Otterstatter (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) to give the Warriors a 2-1 edge at the
21:42 mark.
The Warriors increased their lead 2:08 later when freshman
Taylor Hershoff (New Berlin, Wis./Eisenhower) scored on a free kick
putting WLC on top 3-1. The lead remained intact until the end of
the first half. Each team fired six shots in the opening
period.
Wisconsin Lutheran put the finishing touches on the Vikings at
the 82:14 mark when Higginson scored on a long pass from senior
Jeremy Smith (Waukesha, Wis./New Berlin West) for the Warriors 4-1
final margin.
Goalkeeper Jon Stewart (Waukesha, Wis./South) was solid in the
net all night for the forest green and white as he registered four
saves.
The win was the third straight for WLC, which was out-shot 12-7,
but capitalized on four of its seven chances. Sather and Higginson
each recorded two shots.
The Warriors (3-2) return to action on Saturday when they travel
to Marian University in Fond du Lac, Wis., for their Northern
Athletics Conference opener. The game at Smith Fields is set to
begin at 12 p.m.
