RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College volleyball team suffered a heartbreaking five-set loss,
3-2, to the defending Northern Athletics Conference champion
Dominican University Stars Thursday night at the Igini Sports
Forum. The loss drops the Warriors to 0-2 in conference play.
Wisconsin Lutheran took control of the match early by winning
the opening set, 25-18. However, the Stars came back to win the
next two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-16, respectively. WLC
knotted the match a two sets apiece with a 25-23 set four victory
of its own. The Warriors grabbed an early lead in the fifth
decisive set, but Dominican responded strong by winning the final
set, 15-11.
Sophomore Erin Greenfield (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
recorded 11 kills and 17 digs for a double-double to lead the
Warriors. Senior Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) also added 11 attacks. Sophomore Kayla Ridgeman
(Jefferson, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) collected a team-high 22 digs,
while senior Jenna Neuberger (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
added 13.
Sophomore Mariah Bukiewicz (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) had 24
assists and freshman Beth Baxter (Germantown, Wis./Germantown)
contributed 18 of her own. WLC concluded the match with 14 total
blocks (4 solo, 10 assisted) and six service aces.
Jacy Lawrence had 16 kills and 14 digs for the Stars (7-3, 2-0
NAC). The reigning NAC Student-Athlete of the Week was one of four
players for DU to reach double-digit kill totals.
The Warriors (2-6, 0-2 NAC) have little time to rest before they
compete in the Wis.-Oshkosh Titan Invitational this weekend at the
Kolf Sports Center in Oshkosh, Wis. WLC will face Ripon College
(3:30 p.m.) and Wis.-Eau Claire (7:30 p.m.) tomorrow night.
