FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College men's soccer team fell to the Marian University Sabres 2-1
in the Northern Athletics Conference opener for both teams Saturday
afternoon at Smith Fields.
The Sabres (1-4-1, 1-0 NAC) took an early lead when David Reinke
beat Warriors goalkeeper Jon Stewart (Waukesha, Wis./South) 11:14
into play to put Marian on top 1-0.
That score stood for the rest of the opening half despite the
Warriors firing eight shots on the net opposed to MU's five in the
first 45 minutes of action.
Freshman Jake Semmann (Grafton, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran)
evened the score at 1-1 early into the second half when he scored
off a pass from freshman Mavric Otterstatter (Fond du Lac,
Wis./Winnebago Lutheran). Semmann just beat the outreached hand of
Sabres goalkeeper Tim Wszalek.
The contest did not remain tied long, however, as Marian scored
at the 61:19 mark on a goal by Brandon Zipperer to give the hosts a
2-1 lead.
The Warriors continued applying pressure on the Sabres, but
Wszalek didn't budge as he stopped every shot he saw the remainder
of the game to preserve Marian's 2-1 lead.
For the match, Wisconsin Lutheran out-shot the Sabres by a 15-10
margin. Otterstatter and Florin Maduta (Waterford, Wis./Waterford)
led the Warriors charge by recording three shots each.
Stewart stopped four shots for the forest green and white, while
Wszalek made six saves for the host Sabres.
