ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College volleyball team wrapped up its weekend at the
season-opening ACR Homes Volleyball Season Opener by defeating
Wis.-Oshkosh at Northwestern College's Erickson Center.
The Warriors defeated the Titans, who are receiving votes in the
AVCA Top 25 Preseason Poll, by a final of 3-2. WLC took the opening
set 26-24. After dropping the second set 25-19, the forest green
and white rebounded nicely with a 25-16 third-set win.
Oshkosh, which was also picked second in the highly-competitive
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, took the fourth set
25-21. The fifth and deciding set went to Wisconsin Lutheran,
15-13.
Sophomore Erin Greenfield (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran)
led the Warriors with 17 points and was one of four players to
finish with double-digit points. Greenfield tallied 13 kills to
lead WLC.
Other Warriors posting double-digit points in the win over
Oshkosh were senior Rachel Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) (15.5) and sophomores Alayna Greenfield (Wauwatosa,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) (10.5) and Kelli Johnson (Milwaukee,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) (10).
Sophomore Kayla Ridgeman (Jefferson, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) led
the team with 25 digs. Other players with double-digit digs were
senior Jenna Neuberger (Muskego, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) (17) and
sophomores Mariah Bukiewicz (Oak Creek, Wis./Oak Creek) (14) and
Erin Greenfield (11).
Bukiewicz totaled 26 assists, while freshman Beth Baxter
(Germantown, Wis./Germantown) added 23 for WLC.
The second match of the day pitted the Warriors against another
NCAA Tournament qualifier from a season ago, Northwestern (Minn.).
WLC dropped the contest to the Eagles, 3-1.
Wisconsin Lutheran took the opening set 25-20, before
Northwestern rebounded by winning the final three sets, 25-20,
25-18 and 25-19.
Erin Greenfield once again led the Warriors with 19 points and
16 kills in the second match, while Kelli Johnson added 11.5
points.
Bukiewicz and Baxter each reached double-digit assists against
Northwestern, finishing with 21 and 11, respectively. Ridgeman
played another strong match, finishing with 13 digs.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-3) returns to the court Wednesday when it
faces non-conference opponents Beloit College (5 p.m.) and Carroll
University (7 p.m.) at the MSOE Quad at the Kern Center in
Milwaukee.
