MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's soccer team dropped its home opener to non-conference
opponent Ripon College 1-0 Tuesday evening at Warrior Field. It was
the second straight 1-0 defeat for the Warriors against a Midwest
Conference opponent.
The Warriors fired six shots in the opening period to only two
for visiting Ripon. However, WLC trailed at halftime, 1-0.
The lone goal of the game came in the 30th minute when Ripon's
Marco Rhein found the upper right-most corner of the goal and
bounced the ball in off the right post. It was a very fast play as
Addison Ransom and Jacob Klos made two quick passes to set up the
score for Rhein.
The Warriors were unable to answer and were stopped on all three
of their shot attempts in the second half. Ripon out-shot WLC in
the second half, 6-3, but the Warriors held a 9-8 advantage for the
game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jon Stewart (Waukesha, Wis./South) made six
saves, including five in the second half, to keep the Warriors
within striking distance the entire game.
Senior James Sather (Milwaukee, Wis./Nathan Hale) led WLC with
three shots, two on goal, while freshman Charlie Jankowski
(Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee Falls) and junior Florin Maduta
(Waterford, Wis./Waterford) each added two shots and one on
goal.
Alvaro Calle recorded four shots, three on goal to lead the Red
Hawks (1-2) offense and Adam Haefner made five saves on goal to
collect the shutout.
Wisconsin Lutheran (0-2) returns to non-conference action Friday
afternoon when it travels to Mankato, Minn., for a 5 p.m.
non-conference clash against Bethany Lutheran College at BLC Soccer
Field.
