MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's basketball team extended its Northern Athletics Conference
winning streak to 19 games Wednesday night when it defeated
Edgewood 72-54 at the Recreation Complex.
The Warriors fell behind early 4-2, but it was the only time
they trailed during the game, before taking a 13-5 lead after a
Krissy Day (West Allis, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) three-pointer with
10:35 to play in the first half. WLC kept up its strong play and
took a first half-high lead at 25-15 with 4:41 on the clock.
The Eagles (6-10, 5-5 NAC) responded as they closed the half on
a 12-7 run to cut Wisconsin Lutheran's lead to 32-27 at
halftime.
Shooting percentages were very close in the first 20 minutes as
Edgewood out-shot Wisconsin Lutheran 38.5 percent (10-for-26) to
35.5 percent (11-for-31). The Warriors pulled down eight offensive
rebounds in the opening half as they led the rebounding battle,
25-19.
Kristen Schulz (Safford, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) played a key
role in the opening half as she had six points and eight rebounds,
while Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) led the team with
seven points. Day also had six at half for WLC. Edgewood's Alison
Tobin led all scorers at the break with seven points.
For the first six minutes of the second half, the two teams
played very evenly as Wisconsin Lutheran led by eight points,
47-39, with 14:08 remaining in regulation. Five straight Rachel
Hoft (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) points and a three-pointer by
Alyssa Allister (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) pushed the
Warriors lead to 16 points with 11:47 on the clock.
Edgewood scored the next basket to make the score 55-41, but the
Warriors rattled off the next six points, four by Dillon and two by
Hoft, to jump out to a 61-41 lead with just under 10 minutes
remaining in the game.
Wisconsin Lutheran continued to build its lead and led by a
game-high 24 points, 72-48, with 2:14 remaining, before Edgewood
scored the final six points for the 72-54 final margin.
Second-half shooting was a big reason for the Warriors ability
to run away with the game as they connected on 51.6 percent
(16-for-31) of their shots, including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc.
Edgewood, meanwhile, shot just 25.7 percent (9-for-35) and did not
make any of its seven three-point attempts in the second half.
Both teams fared well on the offensive glass with the Eagles
pulling down 21 offensive rebounds compared to Wisconsin Lutheran's
19, but it was WLC which won the rebounding battle, 48-40.
Dillon led Wisconsin Lutheran with a game-high 14 points off the
bench, while Allister finished with 11, nine of which came in the
second half as she went 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Hoft, Day and
Katelyn Kuehl (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) added nine
points and Schulz grabbed a game-best 12 rebounds. Tobin paced
Edgewood with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Wisconsin Lutheran (12-3, 9-0 NAC) looks to extend its NAC
winning streak to 20 when it visits Dominican (11-5, 7-2 NAC)
Saturday afternoon at the Igini Sports Forum in River Forest, Ill.
