ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's soccer team rolled past Rockford 4-0 Tuesday afternoon in a
Northern Athletics Conference game at Sam Greeley Field in
Rockford, Ill.
Sophomore Brad Mallman (Plymouth, Wis./Plymouth) scored two
goals on the afternoon in leading the Warriors to their second
conference win of the season. Mallman scored the only goal of the
first half at the 36:47 mark to give Wisconsin Lutheran a 1-0 lead
heading into halftime.
In the opening half, the Warriors out-shot the host Regents,
11-0, with four of the WLC shots being fired on net. Rockford's
goalkeeper Mick Goulding made three first-half saves to keep the
margin at 1-0 heading into halftime.
The Warriors wasted little time in the second half building upon
their lead as freshman Matt Schmidt (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) scored
just 59 seconds into the second half for a 2-0 WLC lead. Mallman
then struck again at the 70:48 mark, this time off a cross from
Austin Drake (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) giving the Warriors a 3-0
lead with just under 20 minutes remaining in the game.
Isaac Kolterjahn (Sturgeon Bay, Wis./Sturgeon Bay) added his
third goal of the season with just under 10 minutes left in the
game to give WLC the 4-0 victory. Taylor Hershoff (New Berlin,
Wis./Eisenhower) and Nate Wasser (Lake Geneva, Wis./Shoreland
Lutheran) were credited with assists on the Kolterjahn goal.
For the game, Wisconsin Lutheran out-shot Rockford (1-9-1, 0-5-1
NAC), 20-2, including a 9-2 advantage in the second half. Both of
Rockford's shots were on goal as Warriors keeper Jon Stewart
(Waukesha, Wis./South) made two saves to pick up his seventh win of
the season. Stewart played 85:22 before Josh Junker (Grant Park,
Ill./Grant Park) relieved him in the game's final minutes.
Mallman led WLC with four shots, while Schmidt and Drake added
three shots apiece. Rockford's two shots came from Devin Standard
and Nathan Sweet.
Wisconsin Lutheran (7-6-0, 2-3-0 NAC) returns to the pitch
Saturday when it continues a four-game road swing with a trip to
Watertown, Wis., to face conference opponent Maranatha (5-6-0,
1-3-0 NAC). The Warriors and Crusaders are set to begin at 4:15
p.m. at Maranatha Field.
