MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's soccer team won its program-record 11th game of the season
Saturday as they shutout Lakeland 3-0 on Senior Day at Warrior
Field.
The win clinched a NAC Tournament berth for Wisconsin Lutheran,
its first conference tournament appearance since 2007.
Austin Drake (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) put WLC on the board
16:52 into play when he converted on an incredible bicycle kick
goal to put Wisconsin Lutheran up 1-0 early in the contest. Drake's
goal was his third of the season.
Less than two minutes later it was sophomore Brad Mallmann
(Plymouth, Wis./Plymouth) who gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead when he
scored off a Teffie Joyce (Green Bay, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran)
pass. Mallmann, who had entered the game 30 seconds prior to his
goal, recorded his fifth goal of the season on the play.
That would be all the scoring in the first half as WLC outshot
the Muskies 11-5 during the first 45 minutes. Lakeland goalkeeper
Alex Piekarski made six first-half saves, while Warriors keeper Jon
Stewart (Waukesha, Wis./South) tallied three saves in the opening
half.
The score remained 2-0 until the 73:40 mark when Mallmann
tallied his second goal of the contest, this time off assists from
Drake and Jake Semmann (Grafton, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) for
the three-goal lead.
For the contest, WLC outshot Lakeland 19-7 as the Warriors were
led by senior Tony Bink (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Menomonee
Falls) with his game-high four shots. Paul Elzinga and Farouk
Dadzie each led Lakeland with two shots.
Stewart finished with four saves for his seventh shutout of the
season, while Piekarski stopped 10 shots in the loss.
The game was also Senior Day as Bink and Aaron Longmire
(Allouez, Wis./N.E.W. Lutheran) were honored at halftime. Longmire
has been a part of the WLC defense that has allowed just 18 goals
this season.
Wisconsin Lutheran (11-6-0, 6-3-0 NAC) returns to action Monday
when it hosts Concordia Wisconsin (9-7-0, 7-2-0 NAC) at Warrior
Field. The Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night contest between the
Warriors and Falcons is set to begin at 7 p.m.
