MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
volleyball team fell in a five-set thriller against Benedictine
Wednesday in the final regular season match at the Recreation
Complex.
The Eagles took the opening set 25-21, but WLC responded with a
26-24 set two victory to even the match. BenU won set three by a
25-20 count, but the Warriors had another answer with an exciting
35-33 set four win. BenU had the final answer, however, as it won
the fifth and deciding set, 15-9.
Junior Kayla Ridgeman (Jefferson, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) made
history Tuesday as she recorded 24 digs to bring her career total
to 1,386, which is the most in school history. Ridgeman needed 22
digs for the record to surpass Jenna Neuberger for the top
spot.
Senior Steph Cox (Sheboygan, Wis./Lutheran) also added her name
to the record books on Senior Night as she dished out a match-high
53 assists, placing her second all-time for most assists in a
match.
The Warriors had four players tally double-digit kills in the
match, led by Erin Greenfield's (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) team-high 22. Kelli Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin
Lutheran) added 14 kills, while Alayna Greenfield (Wauwatosa,
Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Katie Molter (Oostburg, Wis./Oostburg)
chipped in with 10 kills apiece. Heather Tompkins (Menomonee Falls,
Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) added 22 digs for WLC.
Benedictine (24-3, 11-1 NAC) was led by Candice Cuppini as she
recorded a match-high 23 kills. The majority of those kills were
assisted by Abby Sattler, who finished with 46 assists.
Wisconsin Lutheran (13-17, 6-6 NAC) will play another match
against the Eagles in the opening round of the 2012 Northern
Athletics Conference Tournament next Tuesday. The seventh-seeded
Warriors and second-seeded Eagles will square off at 7 p.m. at the
Dan and Ada Rice Center in Lisle, Ill.
