DECATUR, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's basketball team used a late 13-2 run and strong defense to
down host Millikin 59-46 Friday night in the Crannell Holiday
Classic at the Griswold Center. The win ties the 2010-2011 squad
for the best start (6-1) in program history.
The Warriors held a 43-42 advantage with 7:23 remaining in the
game before going on the run, which included five points from
senior Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) that gave WLC a
57-44 advantage with just over one minute left in the game. Each
team would score two points over that span as WLC came away with
the 59-46 victory.
Both teams struggled offensively at the start of the contest as
the score was just 6-4 in favor of Millikin with 12:37 left in the
first half. WLC then rattled off a 12-0 run, highlighted by three
consecutive three-pointers from Rachel Hoft (Germantown,
Wis./Germantown) for a 16-6 advantage.
The Big Blue responded, however, as they answered with an 11-2
run of their own, cutting the WLC lead to just one with over six
minutes to play in the first half. The Warriors pushed their lead
back to eight at 29-21 before Millikin closed out the half with a
7-0 run, making the score 29-28 in favor of WLC heading into
halftime.
Millikin scored the first five points of the second half as WLC
would not score again until the 15:21 mark when senior Carrie Thoma
(Richfield, Wis./Hartford Union) knocked down a pair of free
throws. Dillon then connected on a three-point jump shot to
give Wisconsin Lutheran a one-point advantage before Millikin
quickly took back the lead at 35-34 with 12:33 remaining. Hoft
answered with another three-pointer, her fourth of the contest,
which gave the Warriors a 37-35 advantage, a lead they would not
surrender for the remainder of the game.
Dillon filled up the stat sheet for Wisconsin Lutheran as she
finished with 12 points, 10 rebounds, six steals, and four assists
to lead the Warriors in all categories. Hoft also netted 12 points
for the WLC as it finished the game shooting 36.4 percent
(20-for-55) from the floor. Sophomore Kristen Schulz (Safford,
Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) added 11 points, while senior Brittanny
Bahr (Caledonia, Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) chipped in with
eight.
Millikin (1-4) was paced by Nikki Tipsword as she finished with
a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Alyssa Saklak led
all scorers with 14 points as the Big Blue shot just 30.9 percent
(21-for-68) from the floor, including 13.3 percent (2-for-15) from
three-point range.
The Warriors finished the game with a big advantage from the
charity stripe as they made 12 free throws on 19 attempts, while
the Big Blue attempted just six free throws, making two.
Wisconsin Lutheran (6-1) closes out play at the Crannell Holiday
Classic tomorrow afternoon when it takes on Westminster (Mo.) (2-2)
