MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's basketball team defeated Concordia Chicago in overtime
Saturday at the Recreation Complex 90-88 to pick up its first
conference win of the season.
The game was close throughout the first half, with sophomore
Brett Lubbe (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) tying the game at
20-20 with 9:59 left. The Warriors took a 35-34 lead with 2:57
left, but Concordia ended the half on a 7-2 run to enter the break
with a 41-37 lead.
Lubbe led all scorers in the first half with 10 points. Senior
Tim Demuth (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran) added nine points
and four steals.
Concordia Chicago stayed hot for the beginning of the second
half, continuing with a 6-2 run three minutes into the half. Demuth
was able hit back-to-back three-pointers to trim the lead to 51-49
with 14:12 left. At the 8:27 mark, Demuth gave WLC its first lead
with a layup at 63-62.
Sophomore Sam Kuehl (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) nailed
a three-pointer with 2:36 left to give the Warriors a 73-72 lead,
and then another at the 1:10 mark to tie the game at 78-78. Neither
team would score again in regulation, forcing the game into
overtime.
Halfway through overtime, Demuth drained another three to tie
the game at 85-85. Senior Nate Bauer (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside
Lutheran) hit two free throws with just over two minutes left to
give WLC an 87-85 lead. The Warriors would not relinquish their
lead, holding on for the 90-88 victory.
Demuth tied for a game high with 24 points, including 18 from
three-point range. Demuth also had six of the Warriors' 15 steals.
Bauer also had 24 points and seven assists, making 12 of 13 free
throws. Kuehl added a career high 19 points on 7 of 11 shooting.
WLC shot 40.5 percent (30-for-74) from the field and 80 percent
(20-for-25) from the charity stripe.
Tyler Oden led Concordia Chicago (0-7, 0-3 NAC) with 17 points.
Marcus Elston added 14 points and 17 rebounds. Concordia shot 49.2
percent (31-63) from the field and 57.1 percent (12-21) from beyond
the arc.
The Warriors (2-7, 1-3 NAC) will next play at Dominican (3-5,
2-2 NAC) December 15 in River Forest, Ill. Tipoff between the
Warriors and Stars is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Igini Sports
