MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's basketball team suffered its first conference loss of the
season and first home conference defeat in over two years on
Wednesday night after falling to the Lakeland Muskies 77-62 at the
Recreation Complex.
The Warriors benefited from a 55.6 percent (15-for-27) shooting
performance in the first half to take control for the majority of
the opening stanza. After Lakeland's 1-0 lead, its only lead of the
first half, and two ties, the Warriors held the lead for the last
14:55 of the period. A three-pointer from Rachel Hoft (Germantown,
Wis./Germantown) at the 6:34 mark of the half gave WLC a 26-14
lead, its largest lead of the half. The Warriors held nothing less
than a five-point lead for the remainder of the period and went
into halftime in front 35-26.
Katelyn Kuehl (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) netted a
first-half high nine points on 4-for-5 shooting. WLC owned an 18-9
margin in points off turnovers after forcing 13 Muskies miscues.
Becky Mayo scored a team-high six points in the half for Lakeland,
which shot 47.4 percent (9-for-19) from the floor.
Wisconsin Lutheran came out in the second half and drained two
straight three-pointers for a game high lead of 13 points, 41-28,
with 18:44 to play. Soon after however, the Muskies began to slowly
carve into the Warriors' lead. Lakeland took its first lead of the
half at the 12:10 mark at 49-47 and after a jumper by Kristen
Schulz (Safford, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) that tied the game at
49-49, Wisconsin Lutheran was held scoreless for nearly six
minutes.
Trailing by six points at 55-49, the Warriors scored the next
four points to cut their deficit to just two, but were unable to
get any closer the rest of the way. LC made 13 of its 14 free-throw
attempts in the final 2:22 to come away with the victory. Shavon
Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) scored eight points in the
second half for the Warriors, who shot just 29.7 percent
(11-for-37) in the half. Dana Henrichs led Lakeland, which shot
52.2 percent (12-for-23) in the period, with 10 points.
Kuehl and Dillon scored 14 points each and were the only two
Warriors to reach double figures in the contest. Kuehl also added a
game-high seven rebounds. WLC, which last suffered a home
conference loss to these same Muskies on January 30, 2010, shot
40.6 percent (26-for-64) for the game.
Jessica Genke led four players in double figures for Lakeland
(13-6, 8-5 NAC) with 14 points. She also added seven rebounds. The
Muskies were 27-for-34 from the free-throw line, while the Warriors
were held to just 4-for-9 from the charity stripe. LC finished the
game shooting 50 percent (21-for-42) from the floor.
