FORT MYERS, Fla. - Following its only off day
of the week, the Wisconsin Lutheran College baseball team returned
to action at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Thursday,
dropping both games of a doubleheader against Salve Regina (R.I.)
5-2 and 11-2.
Salve Regina jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first
inning of game one, taking advantage of a Warriors error for two
runs. The Warriors cut into the lead in the second inning when
freshman Joey Hodkiewicz (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) drove in
sophomore Sam Braaten (Appleton, Wis./East) with an RBI single.
Sophomore Garrick Day (Elk Mound, Wis./Elk Mound) came around to
score in the third inning on an error by the Salve Regina starting
pitcher Nicholas Gaj, cutting the lead to 3-2. The Seahawks
followed with two more runs in the top of the fifth to help seal
the victory.
Freshman Ian Zahn (Fond du Lac, Wis./Winnebago Lutheran) took
the loss for WLC despite pitching a strong six innings and allowing
just one earned run on three hits. He also struck out five batters.
Braatan, Day, Hodkiewicz and sophomore Cody Nevils (Boca Raton,
Fla./West Boca Raton) each recorded hits for the Warriors.
Gaj picked up the win for Salve Regina (4-2), giving up an
earned run on three hits in five innings of work. Daniel Donohue,
Byron Reding and Anthony Conte each tallied hits for the
Seahawks.
Salve Regina started strong again in the second game, coming
around to score eight times through the first three innings. The
Seahawks tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning, highlighted
by Tyler Colby driving in his third and fourth runs of the game on
a single, bringing the lead to 11-0.
The Warriors finally got to Salve Regina starting pitcher
Matthew Croteau in the sixth after five hitless innings. Day
reached on a one-out single and later came around to score on an
error by the catcher. Freshman Connor Vredeveld (Waterloo,
Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) scored on a pinch-hit single from freshman
Korben Biersack (Greenfield, Wis./Greenfield).
Day, Biersack and Hodkiewicz each had one hit for the Warriors.
Sophomore Alex Nikolai (South Milwaukee, Wis./Thomas More) took the
loss for WLC after working 4.2 innings on the bump.
Croteau earned the win for Salve Regina, scattering three hits
in seven innings of work and did not allow an earned runs while
striking out five. Colby went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run
scored. Donohue and Conte also had two hits and scored three
runs.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-5) plays its final doubleheader in Florida
against Salem State (Mass.) tomorrow, before a single game on
Saturday. First pitch versus the Vikings is scheduled for 9 a.m. ET
at Terry Park #4 in Fort Myers, Fla.
