MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's soccer team netted a 2-0 season-opening victory Friday night
over Bethany Lutheran College at Warrior Field.
The first 11-plus minutes of action saw no goals and not even a
shot attempt from either team until Wisconsin Lutheran went on top
1-0 behind a goal from freshman Matt Schmidt (Wauwatosa,
Wis./East). It was freshman Austin Drake (East Troy, Wis./East
Troy) who fired the ball on the net and Schmidt was there for the
deflection to give Wisconsin Lutheran the early edge. Sophomore
Josh Higginson (Lyons, Wis./Burlington) was also credited with an
assist on the score.
That goal would be the only scoring of the first half as WLC took a
1-0 lead into the break. The Warriors controlled the ball for much
of the first 45 minutes and held an 8-1 advantage in shots in the
opening half. Junior goalkeeper Jon Stewart (Waukesha, Wis./South)
stopped the only Vikings shot he faced in the first half.
The score would remain 1-0 until the 75:40 mark of the second half
when sophomore Jake Semmann (Grafton, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran)
put the Warriors up 2-0 as he scored off a pass from freshman Reed
Luengen (Slinger, Wis./Slinger). That score would account for all
the scoring in the season opener as WLC rolled to a 2-0
victory.
The Warriors dominated the shot column as they fired 17 shots
compared to just four for the Vikings (0-1). Stewart finished the
game with two saves, while his counterpart Ryan Bolte tallied five
stops. Luengen led all players with six shots, while Semmann added
three.
The season opening win was the first for Wisconsin Lutheran since
the 2005 season when they defeated Benedictine by a score of
3-0.
The Warriors (1-0) return to action tomorrow when they face off
against Martin Luther (0-0). The contest between WLC and the
Knights is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. at Warrior Field.
