MILWAUKEE - Sophomore Josh Higginson (Lyons,
Wis./Burlington) scored two goals to lead the Wisconsin Lutheran
College men's soccer team past Martin Luther 3-0 Saturday afternoon
at Warrior Field.
The win was the second straight for WLC as it started a season 2-0
for the first time since 2005. Both wins for Wisconsin
Lutheran came virtue of a shutout by junior goalkeeper Jon Stewart
(Waukesha, Wis./South).
It took over 20 minutes into action, but WLC got on the scoreboard
first when Higginson netted his first goal of the game to give the
Warriors a 1-0 advantage. Higginson scored on a rebound after
freshman Teffie Joyce (Green Bay, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) fired a
shot that hit the crossbar and Higginson was there for the rebound
to put Wisconsin Lutheran ahead. Joyce and Austin Drake (East Troy,
Wis./East Troy) were credited with assists on the scoring play.
That would account for all the first-half scoring as the Warriors
took the one-goal advantage into the locker room. WLC held a
tremendous advantage in first-half shot attempts over the Knights,
12-3.
The second half began with nearly 35 minutes of scoreless play as
it took until the 79:37 mark for Higginson to strike again to give
Wisconsin Lutheran a 2-0 margin. Joyce then recorded his first
collegiate goal just under three minutes later to give Wisconsin
Lutheran a comfortable three-goal advantage. Drake notched his
second assist of the game on the Joyce goal.
For the second consecutive night, WLC held a very sizable margin in
the shots category as it fired 22, compared to just five for Martin
Luther. Joyce led the Warriors with five shots, while Drake and
Higginson each added three. Ryan Lemke and Stephen Roekle each
recorded two shots for MLC.
Stewart needed just one save to record his second straight shutout
while his counterpart, Eric Hahn, made 10 saves for Martin Luther
(0-1) in the loss.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-0-0) returns to the pitch Wednesday for its
first road game of the season against Ripon (1-0). The contest
between the Warriors and Red Hawks is set to begin at 4:30 p.m. at
Prairie Field in Ripon, Wis.
