ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College volleyball team earned its first win of the 2012 season
Saturday by sweeping Buena Vista at the ACR Homes Volleyball Season
Opener at the Erickson Center. The Warriors later fell in
heartbreaking fashion to Grinnell 3-2 in their final match of the
weekend.
Wisconsin Lutheran collected its first win of the season
Saturday morning over Buena Vista in three sets by scores of 25-21,
25-18 and 25-15.
Junior Erin Greenfield (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran), who
was named to the All-Tournament Team, recorded 13 kills and seven
digs for WLC in the opening match of the day. Senior Steph Cox
(Sheboygan, Wis./Lutheran) dished out 31 assists and junior Kayla
Ridgeman (Jefferson, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) added 11 digs. WLC
also had three players with three service aces in the win.
For BVU (1-2), Chelsea Clayton had nine kills and Courtney Van
Haaften was credited with 18 digs.
The Warriors faced Grinnell in their second and final match of
the day and fell in five sets to the Pioneers (1-3). WLC dropped
its first five-set match of the young season by scores of 18-25,
25-16, 21-25, 25-21 and 15-11.
Erin Greenfield again paced the Warriors hitting attack as she
amassed 21 kills. WLC struggled offensively, hitting just .081 for
the match. Cox collected 47 of the team's 51 assists in the match.
Ridgeman and Heather Tompkins (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Kettle Moraine
Lutheran) had 19 and 12 digs, respectively.
Wisconsin Lutheran (1-3) returns to Milwaukee on Wednesday for a
home-opening triangular with MSOE (0-2) and Carroll (1-1) at the
Recreation Complex. The Warriors will face the Raiders in a
non-conference match at 3 p.m., followed by a clash with Carroll at
7 p.m.
