MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
men's soccer team opened the Northern Athletics Conference portion
of its schedule with a 2-1 win over Marian Saturday at Warrior
Field.
The Warriors and Sabres played the first 45 minutes to a scoreless
tie as WLC held an 8-4 advantage in shots in the first half.
Warriors goalkeeper Jon Stewart (Waukesha, Wis./South) only faced
one shot in the first half as he recorded one save.
It took until the 70th minute, but Warriors freshman Matt Bishop
(Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) found the back of the net for the first
goal of the game as he took a pass from Reed Luengen (Slinger,
Wis./Slinger) for a 1-0 WLC advantage. The goal by Bishop was his
second in as many games.
It didn't take long for WLC to build onto its lead as Jake Semmann
(Grafton, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) scored 2:29 later for a 2-0
advantage.
Semmann's goal would prove to be the game-winner as Marian would
add its first score of the contest with just under six minutes to
play when Rob Ogden pushed one past Stewart for a 2-1.
Stewart and the Warriors defense stayed strong the rest of the way,
however, as the Warriors out-lasted Marian, 2-1. Stewart finished
with two saves as he picked up his fourth win of the season.
For the game, WLC out-shot the Sabres (0-4-2, 0-1-0 NAC), 15-7 as
Semmann led all players with four shots. Ogden was one of three
Marian players to finish with two shots each to lead the
Sabres.
Wisconsin Lutheran (4-2-0, 1-0-0 NAC) will play for the
third straight day tomorrow when it plays a non-conference
contest at Eureka (1-3). The Warriors and Red Devils are set for a
3 p.m. start at Traister Field.
