AURORA, Ill. -
The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's tennis team defeated
Aurora in a Northern Athletics Conference match 8-1 Thursday night
at Washington Middle School.
With the win, WLC clinched the #2 seed and a bye in the NAC Team
Tournament, which is scheduled for the spring season. It is the
second straight season the Warriors have earned a bye in the
tournament after earning the #1 seed last year.
Wisconsin Lutheran began the night by winning all three doubles
matches in convincing fashion. The #3 doubles team of Emily Pearson
(Prairie du Sac, Wis./Luther Preparatory) and Alyssa Strangstalien
(Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) won by the largest margin as
they did not drop a game en route to an 8-0 win.
The #2 and #3 doubles teams for Wisconsin Lutheran also had little
trouble as each won their match by a score of 8-3. The #1 duo of
Kaitlyn Strehlow (Hales Corners, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and
Stephanie Gengler (Slinger, Wis./Slinger) downed Aurora's (7-6, 6-4
NAC) top double's team, while the #2 team of Kathryn Hendee
(Rockton, Ill./Hononegah) and Kendall Bonnin (Kenosha, Wis./St.
Joseph) also came away victorious.
The Warriors kept things rolling in singles play gaining victories
in five of the six matches. Strehlow continued her perfection in
NAC singles play this season as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at
#1. Hendee rolled at #2 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win, while Emily
Pearson needed a tie-break for a 7-6 (7-3) first set win before
finishing off her opponent 10-4 in the second set.
Also netting wins for WLC in singles play were Bonnin and
Strangstalien at #4 and #5 singles, respectively. The duo combined
to drop just one game as Bonnin picked up a 6-1, 6-0 victory, while
Strangstalien was dominant in a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Wisconsin Lutheran (10-3, 9-1 NAC) concludes its fall schedule next
Wednesday when it takes on Alverno (3-7, 3-7 NAC) in its final NAC
dual. The Warriors and Inferno will begin play at 4 p.m. at Nicolet
High School in Glendale, Wis.
