RIPON, Wis. -
The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's soccer team was just 1:37
away from sending its non-conference match against Ripon into
overtime on Wednesday night. Unfortunately for the Warriors,
Ripon's Spencer Reisbick scored at the 88:23 mark to give the Red
Hawks a 1-0 win in the contest played at Prairie Field.
Reisbick scored off a pass from Alvaro Calle as the Red Hawks broke
the scoreless tie with just under two minutes remaining in
regulation time. The goal was also the first score WLC allowed this
season.
The first half was a very evenly played contest as the host Red
Hawks held a narrow 5-4 edge in shots through 45 minutes of action.
Warriors goalkeeper Jon Stewart (Waukesha, Wis./South) made two
saves in the net for WLC in the opening half, while his
counterpart, Daneil Mikesell, tallied one first-half save.
Both goalkeepers would continue their strong play for the majority
of the second half. The Reisbick goal that got past Stewart was the
first goal he allowed this season. He had a streak of 268 minutes
and 23 seconds without allowing a goal to start the 2012
campaign.
Stewart finished the game with four saves, while Mikesell also
stopped four shots. The Warriors outshot Ripon (2-1) for the game
as they fired eight shots in the second half and finished with a
12-9 edge.
Brad Mallman (Plymouth, Wis./Plymouth) led Wisconsin Lutheran with
four shots, while Josh Higginson (Lyons, Wis./Burlington) and Matt
Schmidt (Wauwatosa, Wis./East) added two shots apiece. Ripon was
led by Taylor Smith who tallied five shots, three of them on
goal.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-1) will have a week off before returning to
the pitch next Wednesday when it begins a three-game homestand in
four days. The Warriors non-conference contest with Beloit (2-0) is
scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
