Strong Second Half Sends Warriors Over Sabres

MILWAUKEE - After a cold-shooting opening half, the Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team turned up its intensity in the second half en route to a 60-50 Northern Athletics Conference win over Marian Saturday at the Recreation Complex.

Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half as neither team shot higher than 31 percent in the period. The Sabres led for much of the opening half, including a first-half high six point lead, 17-11, with 9:57 left. WLC responded with a 7-0 run to take a one-point lead. After four straight from the Sabres, the Warriors netted the final five points of the half for a 23-21 lead at the break.

Wisconsin Lutheran shot 29.4 percent (10-for-34) in the first half, compared to 30.4 percent (7-for-23) for Marian. Senior Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) paced the Warriors with seven first-half points, while Amelia Mirsberger scored eight for MU. WLC's 26-15 rebounding margin led to 10-2 advantage in second-change points.

Both teams drastically improved their shooting in the second half as the Warriors shot 50 percent from the floor and never lost their lead. Marian stood within four points until the 13:12 mark of the half before the Warriors began to slowly increase their lead. A 10-0 run gave Wisconsin Lutheran its largest lead of the game, 57-42, with 4:39 left to play before winning by the final 10-point margin.

Dillon scored 10 second-half points to finish with a game-high 17. She also added seven rebounds and seven assists, and was the only Warrior in double-figures. Sophomore Kristen Schulz (Safford, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to help lead WLC to a 42-30 rebounding advantage.

The Warriors finished with 39.1 percent shooting clip (25-for-64) for the game. Meanwhile, the Sabres connected on 40.5 percent (17-for-42) of their shots for the game, while making 10 three-pointers.

Rissa Cerveny scored a team-high 14 points for the Sabres (4-12, 3-7 NAC). Dani Huray added 12 points and Sarah Albert corralled a game-best 11 rebounds.

Wisconsin Lutheran (12-2, 7-0 NAC) will next host Dominican (0-16, 0-8 NAC) Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Recreation Complex. Live audio, stats, and video will be provided for the game and the links can be found at wlcsports.com.
