MILWAUKEE - Wisconsin Lutheran College's
Recreation Complex was the site of yet another overtime thriller
Wednesday night, but unfortunately the Warriors came up short
against Rockford 73-64 in a key Northern Athletics Conference game
for both teams.
The first half was full of back and forth action as Wisconsin
Lutheran and Rockford traded leads nine times throughout the half.
The Regents jumped out to a six-point lead thanks to a 7-0 run with
5:26 left in the half. The Warriors answered with their own 9-2 run
to close out the half tied at 25-25.
The Warriors dominated the boards in the first half,
outrebounding the Regents 24-15. Senior Tim Demuth (Franksville,
Wis./Racine Lutheran) led all scorers with 10 points, two of those
baskets coming from behind the three-point line. Wisconsin Lutheran
shared the wealth as six other players chipped in the scoring
column.
The teams picked up the second half right where they left off as
the lead changed hands four times within the first four minutes.
Senior Nate Bauer (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) capped off a
five minute 11-4 run that began at the 14:25 mark with an
old-fashioned three-point play.
The Warriors began an exciting last minute of regulation when
sophomore Kyle Stelse (Jefferson, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) finished
a four-point play to not only end a 17-4 Regents run, but also tie
the game at 57-57 with just :23 second left. Rockford then took a
two-point lead with four seconds left on a David Dixon tip in.
Bauer drove the length of the court and hit a floater from the free
throw line to tie the game at 59-59 as time expired and extend the
excitement into overtime.
Rockford controlled the momentum in overtime as it started out
the period with a 12-2 run. The Regents finished overtime
outscoring the Warriors 14-5 for the 73-64 win. RC was perfect in
the extra session as it was 4-for-4 from the floor and 6-for-6 from
the free-throw line. Conversely, WLC was just 2-for-11 from the
floor.
Bauer finished the game with 15 points to lead the Warriors,
while Demuth added 12 to round out the double-digit scorers. Senior
Julion Griffin (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran), and sophomores
Sam Kuehl (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) and Stelse each
grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. The Warriors shot 35.3 percent
(24-for-68) for the game and won the battle on the glass 44-39.
Dixon led the Regents (6-13, 4-6 NAC), who shot 41.0 percent
(25-for-61) for the game, with 30 points and a game-high 15
rebounds. Rockford shot an effective 87.0 percent (20-for-23) from
the charity stripe.
