MILWAUKEE - A late Wisconsin Lutheran
College 14-2 run guided the Warriors past the NAC North Division
leading Lakeland Muskies Saturday at the Recreation Complex. In
what was an exciting game down the stretch consisting of eight lead
changes, the Warriors prevailed and came out with a 68-64
victory.
After trailing by as many as nine points in the beginning of the
second half, the Warriors put together a streak of baskets to give
them their first lead of the half, 55-54. The 14-2 run put
Wisconsin Lutheran on top of the Muskies by one, but that would be
the start of an exciting finish. With eight lead changes down the
stretch, late baskets by seniors Nate Bauer (Lake Mills,
Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) and Tim Demuth (Franksville, Wis./Racine
Lutheran) and a couple key blocked shots by senior Julion Griffin
(Milwaukee Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) sealed the victory for the
Warriors.
The Warriors could not hold onto their early 7-0 start in the
first half as the Muskies fought their way back to take a 40-35
lead going into halftime. The Warriors were led off the bench by
junior Taylor Chladek (West Allis, Wis./Nathan Hale) who was
perfect from the floor with eight points in the half. The Warriors
led until a strong Lakeland surge with 1:14 left put the Muskies up
by five going into the half. The WLC bench outscored Lakeland's
bench, 15-6, however, Lakeland controlled the paint as they doubled
the Warriors on points in the paint 20-10.
The Warriors bench played a key role in the final score as they
outscored the Muskies 19-10. Demuth led the Warriors in scoring on
the night with 13 points. Bauer and sophomore Brett Lubbe (Las
Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) each added 10 points, and Lubbe also
pulled down 11 rebounds to give himself a double-double in the win.
Griffin finished with nine points and four key blocks. The Warriors
shot 41 percent (25-for-61) from the field and 71.4
percent (10-for-14) from the free throw line.
Lakeland was led in scoring by Jake Schwarz and Justin Ward with
21 and 15 points, respectively. Schwarz also finished with 11
rebounds which led the Muskies and gave him a double-double. The
Muskies shot 43.5 percent (27-for-62) for the game and 75
percent on only four free throw attempts.
Wisconsin Lutheran (8-12, 5-6 NAC) will next host Dominican
