WATERTOWN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College men's basketball team won its third consecutive Northern Athletics Conference game Saturday as it defeated Maranatha 64-53 at Maranatha Gymnasium. The win moves the Warriors back to .500 in league play after starting 0-3.

The Warriors built a first-half best 15-point lead on three separate occasions, including a 32-17 lead with 3:34 remaining in the opening half. The Crusaders had an answer, however, as they closed the half on an 11-2 run to make the halftime score 34-28 in favor of Wisconsin Lutheran.

Sophomore Sam Kuehl (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) scored 11 first-half points to lead all players at the half. The Warriors scorched the nets in the opening half, shooting 51.7 percent (15-for-29) from the floor, while holding Maranatha to just 32 percent (8-for-25) shooting.

Wisconsin Lutheran answered the late first half run from Maranatha by beginning the second half on a 17-3 run and pushing its lead to 51-31 with 14:13 remaining in the game. The Crusaders would not go away however as they responded by cutting the WLC lead to six points at 59-53 with 4:17 on the clock.

The Warriors got defensive the rest of the way as they allowed no points and closed the game on a 5-0 run to win their third straight conference game, 64-53.

The Warriors cooled off a bit in the second half but still finished the game shooting 46.4 percent (26-for-56) from the floor, compared to 33.3 percent (18-for-54) shooting for MBBC. WLC also won the turnover battle, forcing 16 and turning it over 10 times itself.

Senior Tim Demuth (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran) continued his strong play as he poured in 22 points to lead Wisconsin Lutheran. Kuehl finished with 13 points, while senior Julion Griffin (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) pulled down 10 rebounds.

Maranatha (2-8, 0-5 NAC) was led by the duo of Kyle Kurtz and Matthew Hunter as each player finished with 12 points. Tanner Moses and Joel Borchardt added 10 points and seven rebounds apiece for the Crusaders.

Wisconsin Lutheran (6-8, 3-3 NAC) returns to action Monday when it visits Beloit (5-5) for a non-conference game. The Warriors and Buccaneers will tip-off at 7 p.m. at Flood Arena in Beloit, Wis. Fans can follow the action live via audio, stats, and video at wlcsports.com.
