WATERTOWN, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran
College men's basketball team won its third consecutive Northern
Athletics Conference game Saturday as it defeated Maranatha 64-53
at Maranatha Gymnasium. The win moves the Warriors back to .500 in
league play after starting 0-3.
The Warriors built a first-half best 15-point lead on three
separate occasions, including a 32-17 lead with 3:34 remaining in
the opening half. The Crusaders had an answer, however, as they
closed the half on an 11-2 run to make the halftime score 34-28 in
favor of Wisconsin Lutheran.
Sophomore Sam Kuehl (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) scored
11 first-half points to lead all players at the half. The Warriors
scorched the nets in the opening half, shooting 51.7 percent
(15-for-29) from the floor, while holding Maranatha to just 32
percent (8-for-25) shooting.
Wisconsin Lutheran answered the late first half run from
Maranatha by beginning the second half on a 17-3 run and pushing
its lead to 51-31 with 14:13 remaining in the game. The Crusaders
would not go away however as they responded by cutting the WLC lead
to six points at 59-53 with 4:17 on the clock.
The Warriors got defensive the rest of the way as they allowed
no points and closed the game on a 5-0 run to win their third
straight conference game, 64-53.
The Warriors cooled off a bit in the second half but still
finished the game shooting 46.4 percent (26-for-56) from the floor,
compared to 33.3 percent (18-for-54) shooting for MBBC. WLC also
won the turnover battle, forcing 16 and turning it over 10 times
itself.
Senior Tim Demuth (Franksville, Wis./Racine Lutheran) continued
his strong play as he poured in 22 points to lead Wisconsin
Lutheran. Kuehl finished with 13 points, while senior Julion
Griffin (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) pulled down 10
rebounds.
Maranatha (2-8, 0-5 NAC) was led by the duo of Kyle Kurtz and
Matthew Hunter as each player finished with 12 points. Tanner Moses
and Joel Borchardt added 10 points and seven rebounds apiece for
the Crusaders.
Wisconsin Lutheran (6-8, 3-3 NAC) returns to action Monday when
it visits Beloit (5-5) for a non-conference game. The Warriors and
Buccaneers will tip-off at 7 p.m. at Flood Arena in Beloit, Wis.
