Box Score Box score

ROCKFORD, Ill. - Trailing by one with 13 minutes to play, the Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team closed the game on a 28-19 run to defeat Rockford 74-66 Tuesday at the Seaver Center. The win moves WLC to a perfect 6-0 in conference play.

The Regents took a 47-46 lead with 13:03 remaining in the game, but the Warriors responded with a 10-0 run over the next 2:28 for the 56-47 advantage. The Regents closed the gap to five points on a couple different occasions but that would be as close as they came as the Warriors gained the 74-66 win.

Rockford came out strong in its upset attempt of the Warriors as the hosts built a 19-11 lead with 10:37 remaining in the first half. Wisconsin Lutheran scored the next seven points as part of a 12-3 run as the score was even at 23-23 with 6:52 remaining in the half. The two teams were again tied at 31-31 with 1:30 remaining, but the Warriors closed the half strong as they took a 36-33 lead into halftime.

Senior Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) and junior Melanie Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) each tallied nine first-half points to lead the Warriors, who shot 40 percent (16-for-40) from the field in the first 20 minutes. Rockford, which shot 42.3 percent (11-for-26) from the floor, was led by Nicole Lawler's seven first-half points.

The Warriors built their lead to seven points at 43-36 just under two minutes into the half, but Rockford answered with an 11-3 run to take a one-point lead with 13:03 on the clock. A three-pointer by Dillon with 12:44 remaining gave WLC the lead back, one it would not surrender the rest of the game.

The Warriors shot an impressive 54.2 percent (13-for-24) in the second half as they finished the contest connecting on 45.3 percent (29-for-64) of their shots. The Regents made 36.4 percent (18-for-49) of their shots as the WLC defense stifled Rockford in the second half, holding RC to 30.4 percent (7-for-23) shooting. The Warriors also won the turnover battle, 20-11.

Dillon netted a game-high 18 points and was one of four Warriors to finish in double-figures. Laete and junior Rachel Hoft (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) each scored 15 points, while sophomore Kristen Schulz (Safford, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) added 10. Laete pulled down a team-best nine rebounds as well.

Rockford (3-12, 1-6 NAC) was led by Erin Ryczek's team-high 15 points. Lawler, Jessica Bjerning, and Sherrell Woods each scored 10 points for the Regents.

Wisconsin Lutheran (11-2, 6-0 NAC) looks to remain perfect in conference play when it hosts Marian (4-10, 3-5 NAC) Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Recreation Complex. Live audio, stats, and video will be provided for the game and the links can be found at wlcsports.com.
