AURORA, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's basketball team defeated Aurora 73-52 Wednesday at Thornton
Gymnasium to become the first Northern Athletics Conference women's
basketball team to finish undefeated in conference play.
The first half began with both teams battling evenly, with the
game tied at 16-16 with 9:20 left in the opening period. From that
point on, it was all Warriors to close out the half. WLC ended the
half on a 32-12 run to take a commanding 46-28 lead into the locker
room.
Senior Carrie Thoma (Richfield, Wis./Hartford Union) and
sophomore Maggie Gartner (Springdale, Ark./Har-Ber) led the way for
the Warriors, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively.
WLC continued to play stingy defense into the second half,
allowing just two Spartans field goals in the first 10 minutes of
play. During that stretch, the Warriors pushed their lead to 58-34.
WLC held its lead the rest of the way to secure the 73-52 victory
and an undefeated conference season.
Thoma finished with a game and career-high 17 points leading
four Warriors in double-digit scoring. Gartner also contributed a
career-high 14 points, while junior Rachel Hoft (Germantown,
Wis./Germantown) and senior Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope
School) chipped in 13 and 10, respectively. Sophomore Kristen
Schulz (Safford, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) led all players with 10
rebounds. WLC shot 49 percent (28-for-57) for the game compared to
35 percent (19-for-54) for AU.
Aurora (7-18, 4-13 NAC) also had four players reach
double-figures, led by Shay Jenkins' 14 points.
Top-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran (22-2, 17-0 NAC) hosts
eighth-seeded Lakeland (12-13, 10-8 NAC) Saturday in a Northern
Athletics Conference Tournament quarterfinal game at the Recreation
Complex. Tip-off between the Warriors and Muskies is scheduled for
