Warriors Complete Conference Perfection

Box Score Box score

AURORA, Ill. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team defeated Aurora 73-52 Wednesday at Thornton Gymnasium to become the first Northern Athletics Conference women's basketball team to finish undefeated in conference play.

The first half began with both teams battling evenly, with the game tied at 16-16 with 9:20 left in the opening period. From that point on, it was all Warriors to close out the half. WLC ended the half on a 32-12 run to take a commanding 46-28 lead into the locker room.

Senior Carrie Thoma (Richfield, Wis./Hartford Union) and sophomore Maggie Gartner (Springdale, Ark./Har-Ber) led the way for the Warriors, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively.

WLC continued to play stingy defense into the second half, allowing just two Spartans field goals in the first 10 minutes of play. During that stretch, the Warriors pushed their lead to 58-34. WLC held its lead the rest of the way to secure the 73-52 victory and an undefeated conference season.

Thoma finished with a game and career-high 17 points leading four Warriors in double-digit scoring. Gartner also contributed a career-high 14 points, while junior Rachel Hoft (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) and senior Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) chipped in 13 and 10, respectively. Sophomore Kristen Schulz (Safford, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) led all players with 10 rebounds. WLC shot 49 percent (28-for-57) for the game compared to 35 percent (19-for-54) for AU.

Aurora (7-18, 4-13 NAC) also had four players reach double-figures, led by Shay Jenkins' 14 points.

Top-seeded Wisconsin Lutheran (22-2, 17-0 NAC) hosts eighth-seeded Lakeland (12-13, 10-8 NAC) Saturday in a Northern Athletics Conference Tournament quarterfinal game at the Recreation Complex. Tip-off between the Warriors and Muskies is scheduled for 7 p.m. Fans unable to attend the game can follow live audio, stats, and video at wlcsports.com.
