MILWAUKEE - A 19-2 run in the second half broke
open a four-point game and sent the Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's basketball team to a 65-40 Northern Athletics Conference
Tournament Quarterfinal win over Lakeland Saturday at the
Recreation Complex. The win tied a school-record 15th straight for
WLC, which also improved to 13-3 all-time in NAC Tournament
games.
The Warriors offense exploded for 41 points in the second half
after sputtering in the first half. The Muskies kept the game tight
until a 19-2 Warriors run that spanned nearly six minutes and put
the game out of reach at 54-33. Junior Rachel Hoft (Germantown,
Wis./Germantown) was the spark for the Warriors as she recorded 13
points in the final eight minutes of the game, nine of which were
from behind the arc on three straight possessions. The Warriors
were too strong down the stretch and finished the game with a 65-40
victory.
The first half was anything but pretty for the Warriors, who had
15 turnovers and a 34.6 percent (9-for-26) field goal percentage.
The Warriors slowly built a 12-point lead, 18-6, when Lakeland
mounted a comeback. Senior Brittanny Bahr's (Caledonia,
Wis./Shoreland Lutheran) three-pointer with 5:17 left in the half
ended a 7-1 Muskies run that lasted nearly five minutes and brought
the score to 22-13. Wisconsin Lutheran managed to hold off LC to
end the half with a 24-18 lead.
The Warriors were led by Hoft and Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee,
Wis./Hope School) who scored 13 points each. Dillon also led the
team with five assists and seven rebounds. Bahr added 10 points off
the bench to round out the Warriors' double-digit scorers. She also
recorded five steals.
Sophomore Kristen Schulz (Safford, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) and
junior Melanie Laete (Spokane, Wash./Evergreen Lutheran) helped out
the Warriors on the boards as they pulled down seven and six,
respectively. The Warriors outscored the Muskies 20-6 in points off
turnovers, 15-3 in second chance points, and 31-14 in bench
points.
Lakeland (12-14) was led by the duo of Leah Eisner and Becky
Mayo. Eisner finished the night with 14 points, seven rebounds, and
four steals. Mayo added eight points and seven rebounds. The
Muskies shot 31.1 percent (14-for-45) from the floor for the
game.
