MILWAUKEE - Sophomore Kristen Schulz (Safford,
Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) scored a career-high 17 points, grabbed 12
rebounds, and blocked five shots and the Wisconsin Lutheran College
women's basketball team shot 57.1 percent from the floor en route
to claiming a 69-42 Northern Athletics Conference win over
Benedictine Tuesday at the Recreation Complex. The win gave WLC its
fourth 20-win season in the past five years.
After Benedictine opened the game with a basket, the Warriors
rattled off an 11-2 run and proceeded to never trail for the rest
of the contest. The visiting Eagles came within four points on
several occations in the remaining 20 minutes of the first half,
but an 8-2 WLC run that spanned nearly five minutes gave the hosts
their largest lead of the half, 30-19, at the 2:55 mark. The
Warriors went into the locker ahead 30-20.
WLC concluded the opening half shooting 52.0 percent
(13-for-25), while the Eagles shot 30.8 percent (8-for-26). Schulz
tied a first-half high with seven points and five rebounds for the
Warriors. Wisconsin Lutheran dominated the interior as it
outrebounded BenU 20-10 and outscored the visitors 18-4 in points
in the paint. Vincenza Ranallo also netted seven first-half points
for Benedictine.
BenU again scored first in the second half, but it was all
Warriors from that point forward. WLC exploded on a 23-4 run until
the 8:30 mark for a commanding 27-point lead, 53-26. The Warriors
later increased their lead to a game-high 33 points with just under
a minute left before coasting to the 27-point victory.
The Warriors shot a blazing 62.5 percent (15-for-24) in the
second half, while holding the Eagles to just 28.6 percent
(8-for-28). Schulz again paced WLC with 10 points in the
period.
Schulz led all scorers for the second straight game with a
double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds. She also swatted five
shots and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the floor. Senior Shavon
Dillon (Milwaukee, Wis./Hope School) and junior Kelli Johnson
(Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) added 10 points each. Dillon
also dished out eight assists. Wisconsin Lutheran finished the game
shooting 57.1 percent (28-for-49) from the floor and outrebounded
BenU, 42-23.
Ranallo paced the Eagles (11-12, 9-6 NAC) with 12 points, while
Briana Hamilton added 10 points off the bench. BenU was held to a
29.6 percent (16-for-54) shooting clip for the game.
Wisconsin Lutheran (20-2, 15-0 NAC) plays its final regular
season home game Saturday when it hosts conference rival Concordia
Wisconsin (17-6, 14-2 NAC) for Winterfest and Senior Day. The
Warriors and Falcons tip-off at 1 p.m. at the Recreation Complex.
