MILWAUKEE - Senior Shavon Dillon (Milwaukee,
Wis./Hope School) scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 10
rebounds as the Wisconsin Lutheran College women's basketball team
outlasted Concordia Wisconsin for an 81-67 victory Saturday on
Winterfest and Senior Day at the Recreation Complex. The Warriors
secured the top seed in the upcoming NAC Tournament with the
win.
The Warriors early defense and a late Concordia Wisconsin run
was the story of the first half. The Warriors defense stood strong
for most of the first half by recording seven blocked shots. WLC
seemed to have the game in hand until 10:39 left in the opening
half when the Falcons put together a 12-2 run and regained the
21-20 lead. The Warriors managed to fight off the Falcons run by
putting in 11 free throws in the last eight minutes to go into
halftime with a 32-26 lead.
Sophomore Kristen Schulz (Safford, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran)
continued her success immediately by scoring the first basket of
the game only eight seconds into the first half. Schulz controlled
the paint by blocking three shots and pulling down a rebound in the
first minute and a half. Dillon led the Warriors in scoring with 11
points, while junior Melanie Laete (Spokane, Wis./Evergreen
Lutheran) added eight in the first half.
The Falcons came out and took momentum in the second half as
they put together a 14-3 run for a seven-point lead after
overcoming an eight-point deficit. The Warriors' bench players
helped bring the hosts back from their deficit. Four Warriors came
off the bench to score a combined 25 points to make the game
exciting down the stretch. The second half included 10 lead changes
after just four in the first half. Dillon took the game over as she
scored 18 points in the final six minutes of the game. The Warriors
offensive firepower proved too much for the Falcons as WLC finished
with an 81-67 victory.
Dillon led the Warriors in the game scoring 29 points and
pulling down 10 rebounds to give her a double-double on the day.
Laete also pitched in eight points for the Warriors. Juniors Kelli
Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) and Melissa Klemm
(Germantown, Wis./Germantown) led the Warriors off the bench by
scoring nine and seven points, respectively. Schulz finished the
game with 12 rebounds and five blocks. Free throws played a key
role in the victory as WLC finished 32 of 41 (78 percent) from the
line. Wisconsin Lutheran finished the game shooting 40.7 percent
(22-for-54) from the floor.
Concordia Wisconsin (17-7, 14-3 NAC) finished with three players
scoring in double-digits. Katie Luethe, Camille Parsons, and
Tiffany Hendrickson finished the afternoon with 15, 12, and 11
points respectively. Three players also recorded six rebounds for
the Falcons. CUW shot 33.3 percent (23-for-69) for the game.
