Box Score 2 MILWAUKEE – A thrilling comeback by the Wisconsin Lutheran College volleyball team led to a 3-2 victory over MSOE before the Warriors fell 3-1 to Lawrence to split their matches at the MSOE Triangular Wednesday at the Kern Center.
The Warriors used a stunning rally to defeat the host Raiders in their first contest of the afternoon. MSOE won the first two sets 25-21 and 25-23. WLC took the third set 25-22 before a wild fourth set.
Trailing 23-16 and just two points away from losing the match, Wisconsin Lutheran rattled off seven straight points to tie the set at 23-23. The Warriors fended off three match points after that, eventually pulling out the set 31-29 to force a decisive fifth set.
In the fifth set, the Warriors led 14-11 and had three consecutive match points, but couldn't clinch the match as MSOE tied it at 14-14. WLC took the final two points to win the set 16-14, closing the match on a kill by senior Erin Greenfield (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran).
Sophomore Alexis Hafemeister (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa West) registered 54 assists on the match, tying the school's all-time record set by Stefanie Romas against Maranatha October 16, 2004. She also added 10 digs.
Greenfield recorded a double-double, including a team-high 20 kills and 23 digs. Senior Alayna Greenfield (Wauwatosa, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) also had a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs. Senior Kayla Ridgeman (Jefferson, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) led the team with 31 digs and three aces. Senior Kelli Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Wisconsin Lutheran) added 12 kills and a team-high five blocks.
Ali Borrelli led MSOE (3-3) with 35 assists and 23 digs for a double-double of her own. Sarabeth Haworth recored a team-best 13 kills.
In the second match of the night, the Warriors once again tried to comeback from a 2-0 deficit after dropping the first two sets to Lawrence 25-19 and 27-25. WLC lost the first point of the third set but didn't trail again after taking a 2-1 lead on its way to winning the set 25-19. The fourth set turned when the Vikings won six straight points to take an 18-12 lead before winning the set 25-19 to clinch the match.
Hafemeister recorded a double-double with 34 assists and 13 digs for WLC. Erin Greenfield paced the Warriors with 12 kills and junior Jeni Polzin (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) added 10 kills. Ridgeman led the team with 26 digs, while Alayna Greenfield chipped in with 14.
Diane McLeod led Lawrence (2-3) with 37 assists while adding 13 digs. Megan Conley had a team-high 13 kills and Kathleen Rowland finished with 29 digs.
Wisconsin Lutheran (2-4) returns to action when it hosts MSOE in its NACC opener next Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Recreation Complex.
