Volleyball Swept At Pointers Invitational

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The Wisconsin Lutheran College volleyball team opened its season with a 3-0 loss to No. 2 Stevens Point and dropped its second match of the day 3-1 to Ripon Friday at the Pointers Invitational at Berg Gym. 

WHERE THEY STAND

• The Warriors fell to 0-2, Stevens Point improved to 5-0, and Ripon moved to 5-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED: MATCH 1

• WLC dropped the opening set 25-16 but jumped out to a 7-5 lead in the second set after back-to-back kills by Jeni Polzin (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander).
• The Pointers won four straight points and 20 of the next 24 points to win the middle set 25-11.
• The Warriors pulled within 9-8 in the third set after a kill by Nicole Klipstein (Hartford, Wis./Hartford), but Stevens Point rattled off eight straight points before taking the closing set 25-14.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: MATCH 1

• Megan Wierzbicki (Hartford, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) posted a match-high 15 digs and Alexis Hafemeister (Milwaukee, Wis./Wauwatosa West) led the Warriors with 15 assists. Polzin and Haley Feucht (Campbellsport, Wis./Campbellsport) recorded five kills apiece.
• Emma Brunkhorst tallied 11 kills and four blocks for the Pointers, Alexis Hartman piled up 26 assists, and Bri Piepenbrok contributed 13 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED: MATCH 2

• A hard-fought opening set featured nine ties, but the Red Hawks pulled a way for a 25-19 victory.
• The Warriors never led in the second set and fell 25-16.
• Leading 21-19 in the third set, WLC won four of the next five points to take the set 25-20.
• WLC led 3-2 early in the fourth set, but Ripon won the next six points on its way to winning the set 25-17 to end the match.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE: MATCH 2

• Feucht notched a double-double with 13 kills and 17 digs and added four blocks. Bethany Sebald (Phoenix, Ariz./Arizona Lutheran) matched Feucht with 13 kills.
• Hafemeister dished out a match-high 33 assists and Wierzbicki made 18 digs.
• Katie Berrell racked up a match-high 14 digs for Ripon and Brianne Milroy compiled a match-high 20 digs.
• Abbi Williamson posted 30 assists for the Red Hawks.
