Eagles Upend Warriors In NACC Tournament

MADISON, Wis. (WLCSports.com) - The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's volleyball team's season came to an end Tuesday night in the NACC Tournament First Round after a 3-0 defeat against No. 3 Edgewood at the Todd Wehr Edgedome. This was the Warriors' first NACC Tournament appearance since 2013.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Eagles jumped out to an early 10-6 lead, forcing the Warriors to take an early timeout.
  • Following the timeout, Wisconsin Lutheran rallied to knot the score at 12-12 after a 6-2 run.
  • EC ended the set on a 9-3 run to take the opening set, 25-17. Edgewood held a slim advantage in attack percentage, posting a .250 percentage compared to WLC's .231.
  • In the second set, the Warriors were forced to call a timeout to break up a 7-2 Eagles run that gave the hosts a 13-8 lead midway through.
  • The Warriors scored the first point out of the timeout, but Edgewood responded with an 8-1 run to break the set open.
  • WLC was hindered by seven errors in the second set, while the Eagles committed just four with 14 kills. Edgewood took the 2-0 lead after a second set victory of 25-15.
  • With their season on the line, Wisconsin Lutheran battled in the third set and held a late 19-13 lead.
  • The Eagles rallied with four straight points to cut the deficit to 19-17 and forced WLC to call a timeout.
  • After the Warriors held a 23-22 lead, EC rattled off the final three points to cap off the match.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Alysha Kahlow (Fond du Lac, Wis.) led the Warriors with eight kills.
  • Ashley Dyrssen (Vista, Calif.) posted a double-double leading the team in assists (17) and digs (12).
  • Britley Grulke (Hustisford, Wis.) and Grace Tomhave (Verona, Wis.) added six kills apiece for Wisconsin Lutheran.

FOR THE FOES

  • Savannah Koester was the only player to reach double figures in kills in the match with 10.
  • Haley Schwenn led the Eagles with 20 assists, while Alex Zapuchlak added 10.
  • Sarah Uczen had 13 digs and five of the Eagles' 14 service aces. Erika Van Engen contributed 11 digs of her own.
  • EC hit .272 in the contest, with 39 kills and 14 errors in the three sets.
  • Edgewood will travel to No. 2 Aurora Thursday for a NACC Tournament Semifinal.

UP NEXT

  • The Warriors conclude their 2017 season with an overall record of 13-18 and a 6-5 record in the NACC. The 2017 campaign marked the most conference wins since 2012 and the first time over .500 in conference play since 2011.
