WLC Extends Winning Streak To Seven Following Homecoming Sweep

MILWAUKEE (WLCSports.com) – The Wisconsin Lutheran College women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to seven matches with a convincing 3-0 Homecoming victory over Alverno Saturday afternoon inside the Recreation Complex. The Warriors overcame a late 20-11 deficit in the third set to complete the conference sweep and improve to 3-0 in conference play for the first time since 2005.

  • The Warriors held a slim 9-8 lead early in the opening set before rattling off a 14-3 run to take a 23-11 lead. Wisconsin Lutheran held the Inferno to just a .040 attack percentage en route to a 25-13 victory in the first set.
  • The Warriors capitalized on three straight Alverno errors to close out a 5-0 run to gain separation at 19-11 in the second set.
  • The Inferno recovered to trim the deficit to 23-17, but a Grace Tomhave (Lake Mills, Wis.) kill closed out the second set, 25-17. The Warriors hit a match-high .381 in the set.
  • Alverno jumped out to a quick 9-3 advantage in the third set. The hosts battled back to cut the Inferno lead to 12-10 before Alverno rattled off the next five points, forcing WLC to call a timeout trailing 17-10.
  • The Inferno saw its lead grow to 20-11 in the third set. With Alverno leading 21-14, the Warriors rattled off eight straight points off the serves of Michelle Haling (Antioch, Ill.).
  • Knotted up at 23-23, the Green and White scored the final two points, capped off by an Abby Raasch (Stillwater, Minn.) kill.

  • Britley Grulke (Hustisford, Wis.) led the Warriors with 10 kills and tied for a team-high eight digs.
  • Mercedes Pye (Zion, Ill.) added seven kills and also tallied eight digs in the match.
  • Haling dished out a team-high 13 assists and added five service aces. Cassidy Johnson (Germantown, Wis.) contributed 12 assists.
  • As a team, the Warriors hit .222 in the contest while holding the Inferno to .135 on attacks.
  • Wisconsin Lutheran pushed its winning streak to seven matches, one shy of its longest since 2011. 
  • WLC also won its 25th straight match over Alverno.

  • Catie Flannery led Alverno with 10 kills and added five digs.
  • Sam Korn had 13 assists to lead the Inferno, while Neilee Newton had a team-high seven digs.

  • The Warriors play their second conference road match of the season Tuesday when they travel to Edgewood (7-11, 4-2 NACC) for a 7:00 p.m. first serve inside the Todd Wehr Edgedome.
